After splits with her party over gender-affirming care for minors and other conservative proposals contributed to her defeat in this year's Democratic primary, state Rep. Shawn Thierry is joining the ranks of her former opponents.
The Houston Democrat, who took office in 2017, announced Friday morning that she will change her affiliation to Republican and become part of the House Republican Caucus for the four months remaining in her term.
In a news release and social media post, she attacked her former party members as subscribing to "an ideology that is anti-family and anti-children" and invoked her Christian faith as a "Catholic-raised, practicing Baptist."
“The Democratic Party has veered so far left, so deep into the progressive abyss, that it now champions policies I cannot, in good conscience, support—policies like promoting sex changes for vulnerable children and dismantling Title IX protections for women in sports," Thierry said in the news release. "That’s why I am leaving the left and joining the party of family, faith, and freedom." ...
