Migrant mugged 80-year-old Bridgeport woman, prosecutors say (and a judge released him the next day)

CHICAGO — A Venezuelan migrant mugged an 80-year-old Bridgeport woman, only to get chased down and detained by two good Samaritans, officials said. But, even though he is charged with robbing a senior citizen, prosecutors didn’t ask a judge to keep him in custody.

A Chicago police report said the woman was in the 3000 block of South Wentworth, about a block from her home, when a man rode up to her on a bike around 8 a.m. Friday, August 2. She would later tell the police that the man got off his bike, wrestled away her purse, and stole the hat off the top of her head. Then he got back on the bike and pedaled away.


But two suburban men saw the robbery go down, and they chased the assailant, according to the report. The men, ages 43 and 42, detained Elio Redondo Ragas in the 3700 block of South Dearborn and kept him there until cops arrived. Officers arrested Ragas after the victim confirmed that he was the robber, according to the report.
