The end is nigh for snoozefest late-night talk shows
« on: August 19, 2024, 09:55:09 am »
In an interview this week, Jimmy Kimmel conceded that the end is nigh for late-night talk shows.

“I don’t know if there will be any late-night television shows on network TV in 10 years,” the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” host said.

“Maybe there’ll be one but there won’t be a lot of them.”

Jimmy’s right. The culling has already commenced.

After James Corden departed “The Late Late Show” in 2023, CBS didn’t kick off a dramatic “Late Shift”-style talent search of yesteryear — the network brass replaced it with a comedy game show called “After Midnight.”

Maybe it's just that we retire earlier as we get older, but it doesn't seem to me that there's been anything worth watching at that hour since Johnny Carson or, maybe, Jay Leno.

They might be able to save the genre if they would stay out of politics.

I used to watch Carson and if he was peddling his political opinion, it was so veiled that it wasn't the centerpiece of the show.

I used to watch Kimmel's opening monologue. He was darned funny. But then it all became vitriolic political-speak. Click.

I don't hear Greg Gutfeld complaining about his ratings.

It's because its a product poeple want and like.  Unlike the loony left who takes their orange hate past biting comedy.  It only bites.

IMHO Carson was the king of late night talk shows.  His show was so funny at times that I would laugh so hard I could barely breathe with tears running down my face.

Leno I could never get into.  Letterman - meh.  I quit watching late night and after they pretty much did away with sitcoms and went with all the reality garbage, I don't sit and watch TV anymore.  I don't find anything of entertainment value.  Once in a blue moon I'll watch a movie if hubby is watching something.

I think it was Leno who said it was okay to be political on late night TV, as long as you made fun of both sides.
Those days are gone.

I just don't think that the executives get that, with an ocean full of streaming content now, late night is nothing but a pile of fossils in some cave somewhere. Especially when their politicized and not funny.

But....  Gutfeld keeps killing it.  His Homo-genize schtick gets old, but his politcal satire is biting as hell.
