CHICAGO — Legendary talk show host Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, when she slammed former President Trump and his vice president 24 years after she suggested he would make a good president.

"We know all the old tricks and tropes that are designed to distract us from what actually matters," Winfrey told the crowd at the United Center. "But we are beyond ridiculous tweets and lies and foolery. These are complicated times, people, and they require adult conversation. And I welcome those conversations because civilized debate is vital to democracy, and it is the best of America."

In another veiled shot at Trump, Winfrey said, "Now, there's a certain candidate that says if we just go to the polls this one time, that we'll never have to do it again. Well, you know what? You're looking at a registered independent who's proud to vote again and again and again because I'm an American. And that's what Americans do. Voting is the best of America."

Winfrey also took aim at Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, who faced criticism over comments about "childless cat ladies."

It is the last day of the Democratic National Convention, and Vice President Kamala Harris will take the stage to accept her nomination for president.

But before she does so, lawmakers and people representing key policy issues will have a chance to speak.

The theme for the final night of the DNC is “For Our Future,” according to event organizers.

The final night of the Democratic National Convention will feature the testimony of gun violence victims and activists seeking more gun-control measures.

Before Vice President Kamala Harris takes the stage, former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords, who was shot in the head during a campaign event in 2011, Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA), who lost her son in 2012 to gun violence, and the “Tennessee Three,” a group of state lawmakers who were expelled from the Tennessee legislature for leading a protest against gun violence following the 2023 Covenant school shooting, will all be speaking at the DNC on Thursday.

“I was here in 2016. … At that time, then-Secretary [Hillary] Clinton was the only presidential candidate ever to explicitly have a full agenda for gun violence prevention as a policy agenda that she was running on,” McBath told NBC News. “Here we are in 2024. It’s so completely different. It is so completely different now. We now are the Davids to the Goliath of the scourge of gun violence in this country.”

Gun violence is among the top issues for Democrats in this election cycle. In the Democrats’ 92-page party platform, five pages are dedicated to how lawmakers intend to improve gun safety, policing, and public safety.

New York attorney general hits Trump at DNC, says she’s ‘confident’ in $454 million fraud verdict

CHICAGO — Letitia James, the Democratic attorney general of New York, hit out at former President Donald Trump’s legal strategy at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday morning, defending her aggressive $454 million fine against him just hours after her office told an appeals court to uphold the judgment.

During a Thursday morning breakfast event where James was speaking, the Empire State attorney general told the Washington Examiner that the recent effort by Trump’s attorneys to appeal the costly judgment is “basically a repetition of all the things that he has said previously that have been rejected by the courts.”

“So I’m confident” the judgment will be upheld, James added.

James’s remarks come just hours after lawyers for her office urged an appeals court late Wednesday to uphold New York Judge Arthur Engoron’s Feb. 16 ruling. He found Trump and his business associates liable for civil fraud, imposed the multi-million dollar fine, limited Trump’s ability to do business in the state, and placed the Trump Organization under the supervision of a court-appointed monitor for at least three years.

“On appeal, defendants tellingly ignore almost all their deceptions,” Assistant Solicitor General Daniel S. Magy wrote in a 168-page filing, arguing that Trump, the Trump Organization, and top executives within it engaged in a “variety of deceptive strategies” to misrepresent the former president’s assets.

Rather, in his appeal, Trump used the same arguments he made at trial that banks were interested in working with the Trump Organization and found no fraud, Magy added.
