Hurricane Ernesto tracker: Latest forecast path after storm heads for East Coast, bringing possible 'life-threatening surf' conditions

Quote

Hurricane Ernesto made landfall in Bermuda on Saturday as a Category 1 storm. The Weather Channel reported that as of 5 a.m. EST on Sunday morning, half of Bermuda was without power due to storm-related damage.

The National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory that Ernesto's center is now moving away from Bermuda and towards the East Coast of the United States. It's expected to bring potentially "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions" to North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as the Bahamas and Bermuda, over the next couple of days, though it's not expected to make landfall in the U.S.

By Monday night, Ernesto is expected to pass near southeastern Newfoundland, Canada, forecasters said.

Tropical Storm Ernesto's swells still stirring up deadly risks on Atlantic beaches

Quote

Millions of Americans squeezing in a few days at the beach before schools open were warned Sunday that swells generated by Tropical Storm Ernesto presented a severe danger to swimmers along much of the Atlantic coast.

The National Hurricane Center said Sunday that "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions" are likely for the next few days and that beachgoers should stay out of the water if advised by lifeguards. National Weather Service offices from Maine to Florida, warned of dangerous rip currents.

Ernesto, centered almost 700 miles south of Halifax, Canada, was driving maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and was expected to strengthen Sunday. The storm was headed north-northeast at 9 mph. Ernesto was forecast to gain some speed and turn toward the east-northeast in coming days.

At least two deaths have been blamed on Ernesto after two men drowned Friday off Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Dangerous surf and rip currents were also possible on the Bahamas, Bermuda and Atlantic Canada during the next few days, the hurricane center said.

New forecast reveals when and where hurricane season could get active after Ernesto

Quote

Tropical activity in an unusually active hurricane season will take a breather after Ernesto, but forecasters don’t believe it will last long.

Atlantic storms will be limited for at least the next week. Dry, dusty air and some disruptive winds in the upper atmosphere are making it difficult for stormy weather to get its act together. A similar setup kept the Atlantic quiet for a few weeks following record-breaking Hurricane Beryl.

But this brief break in activity isn’t likely to last nearly as long, according to forecasts from the Climate Prediction Center. Once the dry, dusty air eases, Atlantic tropical activity could be off to the races as stormy weather pushes off the coast of Africa and out to sea unimpeded.
