Troubled progressive Oakland mayor Sheng Thao is hit with more public outcry as her career teeters on the brink ahead of November recall election

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is facing calls to resign from police chiefs amid an ongoing surge in violent crime and staffing issues in the beleaguered city.

The demand is a fresh blow to Thao, who is facing a recall election in November.

The Oakland Police Officers Association revealed it had voted unanimously to demand her resignation on Tuesday, stating they will back recall efforts if she fails to step aside.

The organization, led by President Huy Nguyen, warned the city has become a laughing stock.

'We're a joke and not just in the state but in the country and world. We need to change the state of the city,' Sgt. Nguyen told a press conference, Mercury News reports.

Prior to becoming mayor she was a city council member, one of those who called for slashing OPD's budget, which it was. Along with OPD reductions, pro-criminal DA Price, and a moronic ballot proposition or two, crime in Oakland has soared. Crime has gotten so bad that several popular profitable restaurants near Oakland International have closed due to the danger to customers and employees.

IMO, even if DA Price and Mayor Sheng Thao are replaced by sane people and Oakland and Alameda County fight crime seriously it will take 5 or 10 years just to return Oakland to being merely sketchy. Other than driving through Oakland on the way to running events, I have not been in Oakland since 1996. There are several running events done in Oakland every and I won't even consider doing them.

Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao faces federal bribery, fraud charges:

Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, her longtime partner and two local businessmen were named in an indictment unsealed Friday alleging the four conspired to funnel city business to companies owned by the men in exchange for money and benefits to Thao and her partner.

Thao, Andre Jones and business owners Andy and David Duong were indicted on charges of bribery, conspiracy and mail and wire fraud. Andy Duong also was charged with one count of lying to federal agents. All four made an initial appearance Friday.

Federal prosecutors allege Thao, who was elected Oakland’s mayor in 2022, agreed that the city would purchase housing units from one of the Duongs’ companies and renew the city’s contract with a recycling company David Duong owned. In exchange, David Duong and his son, Andy, promised to fund a $75,000 mailer attacking Thao’s political opponents and make $300,000 in payments for a no-show job for Jones, who is described in the indictment as Thao’s longtime romantic partner who lived with Thao in Oakland. ...

Sheng Thao was born and raised in Stockton, CA, so Laos never had her to "want her back".
