Calvin Coolidge was president when the federal government began paying to pump sand onto what was arguably the nation’s first beach resort town: Coney Island, New York.

A century later, President Joe Biden has continued one of the most cash-bleeding civil works programs ever conceived by Washington, known as “beach renourishment.”

As I write today, weaning Long Beach, New Jersey, or any other popular beach destination off of taxpayer-subsidized sand has proven extremely difficult.

Americans’ demand for wide and sandy beaches along saltwater coasts is insatiable — even as sea-level rise and intensifying coastal storms erode public beaches at faster rates

My natural beaches are rocks, pebbles, and broken shells.  What isn't beach is tidal mud flats or marsh.

Maybe public funds should not be used to subsidize millior dollar property values in naturally unsustainable areas.  Maybe rich, powerful people can live next to the railroad tracks, airport runways, highways, EPA Superfund sites, and heavy industry like poor people have to.

I guess I'm having a blonde moment...but why the heck should the Feds be involved in funding this? If the states want beaches they can fund it.

Geez...no wonder we're broke.

The US Army Corps of Engineers takes the lead on major flood management efforts.  Some areas should be allowed to flood if that's what Nature wants.

@berdie  no, not a blonde moment, just a moment where your questioning the Feds (and you should).  (Unless I'm missing something).

??? Well I checked our  beaches are paid through bed tax revenue (hotels). Everywhere the beach is publicly accessible (as defined by the State of Florida), the recreational portion is funded with bed tax revenue.

Climate change of course is just a way for the Feds to control and put their fingers in the cookie jar.

The erosion is more a function of people building at the coast, interrupting the natural movement of sand.  Other shorelines (Waikiki) were never sandy to begin with.

More than that - Building codes should reflect that too. There's a reason why beach dwellers historically  make cheap houses made of grass... There's a reason why swamp dwellers historically set their shacks high up on poles.. and mountain folks make their homes of heavy logs.

The pseudo-colonial chunked and formed 5000 ft2 McMansion is not the best form for all locations.

If your grass hut blows down, a few hundred bucks puts up another one.
If your McMansion blows down, that's a quarter million...

Interesting. As far as I know, although a south Texan will probably dispute, we have no sandy beaches.I was in a friendly debate with a Floridian several years about the superiority of our respective states. He pointed out that we have no beaches. Me responding "Sure we do!". He rolled his eyes...and truth be told so did I. :rolling:
