Wagner doesn't seem to do well in the desert. The US also spanked Wagner so hard during the battle of Kasham in 2018 that Wagner gave out medals for survivors. The US's casualties that day: only a sprained ankle.

Mali has a cornucopia of natural resources including gold, phosphates, kaolin, salt, limestone, uranium, gypsum, granite, hydropower, note, bauxite, iron ore, manganese, tin, and copper.

Putin wants to control and exploit these resources now that he's maneuvered the French into departing Mali.
