New film camera aimed at 'nostalgic' young Japanese fans

Keita Suzuki leads a group of young analogue photography fans around a coastal city in Japan, stopping to snap pastel hydrangea blooms with bulky vintage film cameras.

The participants later share their lush retro-looking snaps online -- a trend a top Japanese camera brand wants to capture with its first new film model in two decades.

Instead of pressing a smartphone button, more and more young people "want to experience the original act of taking a photograph: winding the film up, looking through the viewfinder and releasing the shutter", Suzuki told AFP.

Another "beauty" of film photography is that with limited physical film, you must think carefully about which memories to "lock in" to each photograph, he said.

Suzuki advertises his tours on social media and has seen a growing interest from teens and 20-somethings loading 35mm film and taking it to be developed for the first time.

Yuriko Yamada was one of around 20 people who joined a recent gathering in Kamakura near Tokyo.

"Digital photos are clear and clean, but film ones have faint, soft colors, which I prefer," the 34-year-old said.

If it's like around here...they will have a hard time finding companies that do the developing. And if they do it might take months to get the prints back.

Pretty sure I have a like-new Polaroid camera around here, just begging for a new home.

Years ago I tried to get pictures printed using the many negatives that my parents had. They wanted so much to print from those negatives, I set up my own darkroom. I didn't even own a camera at the time. I stayed with B&W.

Like Vinyl etc. there will always be people who prefer the old way.

I remember back in the 90's I'd take a roll of pictures in a camera and be too lazy to get them developed.

Those photos are indestructible.   Have pics of my ex-wife from 45 years ago that my kids (in their late 30's and mid 40's) are fighting over.   happy77

IMO, it's the interchangeable lens capability...and of course controlling the depth of field (bokeh)

Ageing had a dramatic effect on my putting my cameras away in the closet because it was too difficult to focus.

With the advent of automatic-focus (AF) lenses it made it a lot more satisfying, but only on "STILL" photos as opposed to "ACTION" subjects.

My Nikon set-up still lacks the instantaneous time necessary...it takes too long for the lens to correct itself when the subject is not perfectly still.

My camera and lenses have been setting in my bag on the floor next to my end table in my living room for almost a year now.   :laugh:

My pops worked for Honeywell when I was a kid.  They had distibution rights for Pentax stuff back then.  I had 5 Pentax camera's.  Sold 4 on Ebay 10 years ago.   But I kept the 1st one my dad bought me in 1976. A KX Blaxk Body with a 1.4 lenz.

I found that to be a delight.  I was President of my High School Photography Club, and I got to use a bunch of different cameras.  We had a Hassleblod and a Press Camera that took 4X5 negatives.

The software out today lets you convert color photos to "grayscale" ...but Ansell Adams would beat you with a cane.  LOL!

It really is.  Back in the day you bought the lens with the lowest F-Stop you could afford.

Seeing the subject "upside down" in the viewfinder was unsettling to me.

Difference in price for a Nikon AS-G 85m 1.8 and a 1.4 is about a thousand dollars  UGH!!

The Hassleblod was like driving a Rolls, but I hated the square format.  I loved the Press Camera!  We loaded it with some ASA 32 and took a picture of our Vice Principal.  We were able to blow it up to live size and we had rolls of wide Matte paper to print it with our best enlarger.  Only a little grainy.

Oh yeah. Back in the day I worked freelance in HS for my local paper in HS.  They paid me $5 per picture published. (My photo credit was "Submitted")  Anyway I wanted to buy a 135 MM lens to shoot BB games from the balcony above the basket.  The only thing I could afford was a used  3.5 F screw mount lens.  My KX body camera was bayonet mount.  so I had to buy an adaptor.  That damn thing would never stay fixed to the lens when I changed back to the 50MM.   Live and learn. 

Back to your point. Low F-Stop telephoto's are expensive.

As sports editor of our HS paper they Had one of those for us to use.  I hated it.  great for stills.  But for action shots STL was the best for following the action.  Well that and the power film advance
