Claims that President Joe Biden’s withdrawal decision was up to him were tainted by reports of a “palace coup” as top Democrats made the case to “do this the easy way or the hard way.”
Within a month of his disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump, the incumbent responded to the calls from within his own party and ended his re-election campaign. Now, amid the unusual circumstances of the social media announcement and absence from the public eye, a source close to the Biden family told the New York Post Monday that the early head-to-head was part of a plan to force an early exit.
“The debate was a set-up to convince Democrats that he couldn’t run for president,” the source told the newspaper as party leaders reportedly played the “good cop, bad cop” routine with the 25th Amendment.
Prior to the start of the Republican National Convention, and the same day that an attempt had been made on Trump’s life, Senate Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) visited Biden to make the case that he step aside.
A source informed the Post that the 35-minute visit to the resident-in-chief’s Delaware home had him open “by saying he was there out of love and affection and he came as a friend and colleague.”
