Donald Trump Speaks With Zelensky, Vows to End Russian War in Ukraine

Former President Donald Trump said Friday he had spoken by telephone with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky and vowed to end the war with Russia.

In a statement posted on Truth Social on Friday, Mr Trump said that he had a “very good phone call” with President Zelensky, in which the Ukrainian leader congratulated the former president for once again becoming the Republican nominee for President of the United States and condemned the “heinous assassination attempt” on his life last Saturday.

“I appreciate President Zelensky for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families,” Mr Trump wrote.

“Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity.”

The Ukrainian president confirmed the phone call with the frontrunner in the 2024 presidential race, writing on X: “We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting,” Zelensky said in a post on X.

“I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support for protecting our nation’s freedom and independence,” he said.

“Ukraine will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening our ability to resist Russian terror. Russian attacks on our cities and villages continue every day.

“We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting.”

Prior to the phone call, Zelensky said this week that he would “work‘ together with Trump if he win’s the White House in November.

Best guess is that the pro-Kremlin and neo-isolationist crowd will be sorely disappointed once it dawns on Trump that Putin can't be dealt with in good faith, and then goes all in backing Zelensky.

Just spitballin' here, but come 2025, what if a negotiated ceasefire was secured with these terms:

(1) Russia cedes Crimea back to Ukraine
(2) A closely monitored set of elections are held in the Eastern 4 or 5 Ukrainian provinces to determine where each country the populus would like to align with.  Based on vote, geographical lines may be redrawn. 
(3) Post treaty, if Russia ever has an incursion into another Eastern European Country, that NATO membership is immediately offered to all.
(4) All sanctions on Russia are lifted after completion of these elections, and all arm forces are withdrawn.

I wouldn't say it was impossible, but it would allow Putin to at least save some face.  Reason?:  After Trump takes office, and the price of oil drops back down to $50/60 bbl......  Putin's source of cash to remotely wage this war pretty much ends.

Russia seized Crimea in February 2014 with the "Little Green Men" from Spetznaz and Wagner, which kicked off this war in the first place.  Putin will never give it back because it is strategically vital for controlling the Black Sea and it is home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet at Sevastopol.

(2) A closely monitored set of elections are held in the Eastern 4 or 5 Ukrainian provinces to determine where each country the populus would like to align with.  Based on vote, geographical lines may be redrawn.

That wouldn't work because the war has upended the entire social and political order in Eastern Ukraine, and Putin has engaged in "Russification" of the areas and cities under his control.  Just like his earlier sham "referendums" on annexation, any such elections would be grossly compromised and unfair, with Putin doing everything in his power to press his thumb down onto those scales.

(3) Post treaty, if Russia ever has an incursion into another Eastern European Country, that NATO membership is immediately offered to all.

Turkey and Hungary would never agree to that.

Putin has no intention of withdrawing any of his forces from Eastern Ukraine, even if somehow, the Ukrainian side won them.  He is a bad faith, lying dictator whose word is worthless.  How do you negotiate with somebody like that?

Good points, but a broke Putin has fewer cards to play.  I think you contention is if the economic situation is status-quo.  $40 bbl oil creates a much different dynamic.
