SAN DIEGO, Calif. (TND) — A Sierra Leone man was arrested this month for allegedly leading an organization that has smuggled thousands of migrants into the U.S.
Abdul Karim Conteh helped bring migrants from countries like Iran and Afghanistan to the U.S., according to federal prosecutors. His organization often charged people thousands of dollars to bring them through Central America and into Mexico to cross the border, the lawyers claimed.
“This arrest unravels a global web of coordinated human smuggling into the United States,” U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath said in a statement Thursday. “Even the most far-reaching, prolific networks cannot evade justice.”
Conteh’s wife, Veronica Roblero, allegedly helped transport the migrants. Conteh then supervised their travel into the U.S. through ladders and tunnels, according to the prosecutors. Both were charged with conspiracy to smuggle migrants, although the U.S. is still looking to arrest Roblero.
