‘Twisters’ Director on Not Mentioning Climate Change: Movies Shouldn’t “Preach a Message”

The storm-chasing sequel Twisters is racking up positive reviews (currently at 84 percent “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes) and continues a much-needed summer of Glen Powell. The film chronicles an unprecedented outbreak of violent storms that tear through the American heartland, with characters spouting plenty of meteorological jargon.

But the one thing Twisters doesn’t have: a reference to climate change.

This is rather surprising. The possible impact of climate change on tornadoes is complicated and still being figured out, but scientists seem to agree tornado patterns are changing (with more tornadoes happening on the same days and more tornadoes happening outside of Tornado Alley, even if the number of tornadoes overall is unchanged). And, in any case, the American Red Cross recent told ABC News that “the climate crisis is forcing the American Red Cross to respond to nearly twice as many large disasters as we did a decade ago.”

50 years ago today, the South and part of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys were devastated by one of the most significant weather events in U.S. history. Infamously known as the 1974 Super Outbreak, which lasted from April 3-4, 1974, the Outbreak was the first on record to produce more than 100 tornadoes in a 24-hour period. The onslaught resulted in the loss of 335 lives and $600 million in damages.

The Super Outbreak wrought havoc across 13 states, producing the second-largest outbreak of tornadoes on record, including seven EF-5 tornadoes — the most in a single day. The outbreak included the disastrous Xenia, Ohio, tornado.

It's classic Marxist propaganda. When the broad shovel narrative doesn't work, cherry pick something and magnify it out of proportion as if it's the whole picture.

They do this with hurricanes too, saying that they are reaching Cat 5 more quickly because of all the heat, even though we've had many years of subdued hurricane seasons. Or they focus on the dollar damage, not factoring in inflation and the fact that coastal areas have built up with more population per square mile.
