US-made Abrams are better than Russia's best tanks in the war, Ukrainian commander says, and it's not even close

Russia's monthlong open-air exhibition features more than 30 vehicles captured in the Ukraine war.
Many of them are NATO-made, including the US Bradley and Abrams, as well as the German Leopard 2.
The variety of vehicles also shows the sheer diversity of weaponry that Ukraine is using on the battlefield.
Russia launched an exhibition on Wednesday showcasing more than 30 military vehicles it's captured from Ukraine since the invasion began, in an open-air "trophy" display gloating over its seized NATO equipment.

The exhibition was packed with visitors on opening day, which coincides with Russia's International Workers' Day. It is being held for a month at Moscow's Victory Park, the capital's large memorial complex dedicated to the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called the exhibition a "brilliant idea."

"The exhibition of trophy equipment will attract great interest from Moscow residents, guests of our city, and all residents of the country," Peskov said. "We should all see the enemy's battered equipment."

Photos of the "Trophies of the Russian Army" exhibition show equipment from over a dozen countries, giving a glimpse of the sheer diversity of weaponry used by Ukraine's forces since 2022.

Not all of them were recently obtained. Some vehicles, including American-made ones, were already displayed in an earlier exhibition in August.

Dutch-based open-source outlet Oryx reported that Ukraine has deployed more than 5,640 vehicles, about 1,000 of which were captured during the war.

The war in Ukraine hasn't really featured the kind of tank-on-tank engagements that the M1A1 Abrams was designed to win. And instead of leading massive armored breakthroughs, another function they were built to carry out, these tanks are primarily being used in more of a supporting role.

But a Ukrainian tank commander said the Abrams was still a dominant tank on the battlefield — better than the Soviet-era ones Kyiv fielded at the start of the war and even Russia's top and most celebrated tanks.

"It's better than T-72, T-62, and even Russian T-90," the commander, who goes by the call sign Zakon, said through a translator during a recent interview with Business Insider from an undisclosed location near the front lines in eastern Ukraine.

He said the M1A1, even though it's an older model of the Abrams that has been the main US battle tank for decades, was twice as good as Russia's T-90. "It's like a mouse against a big cat, if we compare these tanks," he told BI this week.

Zakon did not specify T-90 variants when he compared the American-made Abrams with Russian armor. However, Gian Gentile, the associate director of RAND's Arroyo Center and a retired US Army officer with experience in the Abrams, previously told BI that even the T-90M was "inferior" to the Abrams because it's less heavily armored, making it more vulnerable, and has worse technology, particularly the optics and fire-control systems.

In an actual tank-on-tank engagement, first to see and accurately fire will probably win. The superior optics, sensors, and targeting that accomplish this are also useful for other combat purposes.

The battle at 73 Easting already showed superiority to the hardware the Iraqis had T-72s and BMP-1s. The difference included training, the fire control systems the Americans had, and the armored vehicles they were on.

IIRC, much of the US tanks' superior performance was due to sensors that could "see" through a sand storm (not that a BMP of any variant would hold up to an Abrams shell. From what I've read, US-supplied Bradleys also do rather well against BMPs.

You recall correctly. The ability to target Iraqi vehicles despite poor visibility was a key element in the victory.
