NBC’s Soboroff: Mass Deportation Signs at RNC ‘Disturbing,’ ‘Unity Sort of Went out the Window’

Ian Hanchett 18 Jul 2024

On Thursday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” NBC News Political and National Correspondent Jacob Soboroff stated that it “was disturbing” to see people at the RNC holding signs advocating for mass deportations and “the idea that these divisive and polarizing figures and issues from the first President Trump term were not going to be front and center after the horrific assassination attempt just was not the reality on the ground here and in the arena last night.”

Soboroff stated, “nity sort of went out the window, and I think no issue better encapsulates a shift away from a unifying tone than the way that immigration was talked about last night. I can give you many examples, but maybe first and most startling, but not surprising, is the fact that the campaign itself, the RNC, handed out signs to support the party platform saying, ‘Mass [Deportation] Now.’ And there was something about being…in the audience and seeing thousands of people hold these signs that was disturbing, that was troubling, quite frankly.”

He continued, “It’s part of…the policy platform here at the RNC to create the largest deportation effort in American history. It calls back to the Bracero program in the 1950s that brought over Mexican guest workers and then the Eisenhower administration in 1954 deported a million Mexicans, and some Mexican Americans actually, in an effort that, at the time, was the largest ever in American history. Donald Trump wants to go far beyond that. There are well over 10 million, 11 million, even more by some estimations, undocumented people living in this country, that have been here for many, many years. And the idea that they were celebrating this, not just with these placards and these signs, but Tom Homan was a featured speaker last night. And to remind everybody, Tom Homan was the acting ICE Director, first under the Obama administration, but then, under the Trump administration. During the Obama administration, he pitched and proposed a family separation policy and it was rejected out of hand by then-Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson. Of course, with Stephen Miller in power and other Trump administration officials, that proposal was ultimately adopted. … Stephen Miller was up on the stage walking around with Donald Trump yesterday during the walk-through for his speech that he will give tonight. So, the idea that these divisive and polarizing figures and issues from the first President Trump term were not going to be front and center after the horrific assassination attempt just was not the reality on the ground here and in the arena last night.”

You are all delusional if you think there will be mass deportations. The only ones that will be deported are the true criminals.

COC, every business association, all large corporations, the building trades etc will be against large deportations.

The National Association of Realtors said id there was 20 million deported the housing prices would crater in a panic. Home prices would drop 20-30% and new homebuyers would be underwater. It would be great for new homebuyers but current people who just bought over the last 4-5 years would be in bad shape.

Illegals are getting work permit cards and a national id number and they contribute towards SS
Theywill be allowed to stay under a guest worker program.  Most whites will never do the jobs they do.
TRump may build a wall but it will have numoerus entrances.

I don't know who this Soboroff is, but he never got to explaining why mass deportations would be a bad thing.

@banddag - who are the delusional "you all" to whom you addressed your comment? No TBR member posted here to say there would be mass deportations. Myst simply posted comments from a Democrat complaining that people at the convention were calling for deportations.

I wonder if Retread knew the shooter.  He lives near him.  In fact, Bandag hates Trump enough, maybe he was the point man who set the kid up for the fall?

His inner Deranged Democrat is showing when he sets up straw men (those 'delusional' types) just so he can show them who's boss.

Also, when policies on employers get ratcheted up the illegals they like to hire self-deport. All on their own.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
The only 'divisiveness' I see is the distinction between those who are here legally and those who are not.

It sure seem that even in the 'sanctuary cities' the latter have become a bit of a problem, fiscally, socially, and in terms of criminal activity above and beyond their mere presence (which is a crime, too).

Sending those who have breached our borders, in defiance of the peace and dignity of a sovereign nation, back to wherever they came from.

Otherwise, over 11,000,000 lawbreakers would be allowed to be scattered among us, often at our expense. How would that be a good idea?

I think one criteria for determining who should be deported first is who voted in the election. It won't be hard to figure out from voter rolls. We should make everyone aware of this prior to the election. Once the deportations start and the illegals start claiming they didn't vote we should be able to track down who voted for them and those people can go to prison.

Or just simply cut off the freebies

Right now we’re incentivizing them to come over

Yeah. It's what happens when someone gives you tickets to an all expenses paid stay...

Some are being flown in (over 400,000 so far) from their country of origin or other locales and we're picking up that tab, too.

We need to deport the illegal migrants immediately, before they start giving birth to anchor babies.  The longer they stay, the less likely we'll be able to deport them.

But all here want mass deportations.  Again this country needs the younger workers. Our native birth rate is now in the negative. One reason why housing is not being built is builders cannot find the workers. A guest worker card is what you will get.

Housing is not being built because of NIMBY snob zoning laws.

@banddag talk of building the wall and deportations has been going on for awhile and is nothing new.  In 2006 the Secure Fence Act was agreed upon by both Houses of Congress and signed into law.  Funding has been the issue -- it was never completed.

Both Cruz and Trump brought up completing the wall and deportations during their campaign in '16.

Much of the wall which Trump was able to complete was repairing or replacing existing wall that was previously built.  Without going into repeating the resistance by the left and some on the right for funding; at the end of the day, Trump had the materials. Joe rescinded e.o.'s that Trump implemented and disposed of the materials.

It would be much simpler to build the wall and not let them in, in the first place.

We've been invaded.  That's not even debatable.  Either you are for the invasion or you're against it.  @rangerrebew has done a great job of keeping this forum abreast of what is happening at the southern border in the "Immigration" thread and he has posted many stats of the costs. The problem isn't just financial; the bigger problem is that innocent LEGAL citizens are falling victim to the hands of ILLEGALS.  That's been going on for decades.  Only that problem continues to grow. You might want to pay that thread a visit.  Just sayin'.

Housing is not being built because of NIMBY snob zoning laws.
That and the price of everything is going up, including the cost of a loan.
When interest rates drop, interest in purchasing a house goes up.
No one in their right mind wants a variable rate interest loan in an economically questionable future, and locking in on a fixed rate is always a crapshoot because rates have to drop a few percent to make a refi worth it.

Except they're not working. They're sitting around collecting freebies: gift cards, phones, housing, food ...

Although I do agree with you that mass deportations are not going to happen and it’s  only just red meat for the base, you’re not defending Biden’s border policy, are you?

I went to a Sheetz this morning for a coffee (it's like Wawa, a gas station that serves made-to-order food) and was behind some hispanic fellows in line who were buying a bunch of cold drinks. They were wearing work duds and boots, probably building the new Starbucks nearby. Well, okay, I hope they were here legally. If they're actually working, great.
