Bidenflation: California Dad Spends $444 at Trader Joe’s to Feed Six Children

Amy Furr 7 Jul 2024

A man in California spent more than $400 dollars at Trader Joe’s to feed his six children for a week and a half, as Americans struggle to survive in President Joe Biden’s (D) economy.

The father shared a video online that showed a receipt from the store in Westlake Village in Los Angeles County, Fox Business reported Saturday.

“Here’s what it takes to feed six kids in about a week and a half,” the man said in the video. The camera then pans down to show the bottom of the receipt which says the total bill was $444.38:

Some social media users were upset at Trader Joe’s prices and encouraged people to shop at Aldi while others claimed Trader Joe’s prepared foods are not made to feed numerous people for less money.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reported that “Trader Joe’s prides itself in its reputation for being a cost effective option.”

Okay..I have a few comments on this...first Trader Joe's is expensive, find a cheaper store.

Second..look at that receipt..someone in that household needs to learn to cook...just about everything is for the microwave...lots of junk food and candy on it too.

Years ago with my two boys[probably could eat for four] and on an Army's Sgt's pay I cooked from scratch and baked cookies, cakes and pies instead of buying all that junk...I know things are tough but this guy could probably lower that food bill by half if he would stop buying pre-made food for the microwave.

Exactly. I have no sympathy for stupid people.

My kid is the same way.  He is broke as F and still refuses to cut out the Whole Foods, Trader Joe, and home delivery.  Pisses  me off that I raised a fool when it comes to money.

I was going EXACTLY there. Thank you.

Flour, sugar, salt, brown sugar.
Grow a garden. If not a garden, buy produce by the flat and put it up.
Hunt, fish... raise and slaughter your own meat. If not, buy half a pig and half a beef at a time.

I think I could cut that bill in half, without any real difference in food, and certainly of a better quality.

Does he live in Westlake Village, too? Maybe he should try a less pricey neighborhood. Like moving to Kansas or something. Or just look into Aldi, like the folks recommended.

??? I don't know, you need to consider that he has six kids and himself to feed.  I don't think $400 is all that much -- in perspective that's roughly $60 a week to feed one kid -- with today's prices, I don't find it at all beyond reasonable.

For the two of us our grocery bill for the month is ridiculous; granted I stock up, but it's a chunk of change.  I don't buy microwave meals.  I do buy microwave vegs as fresh spoils too quickly with just the two of us.  I make our pies, cakes, from scratch -- a darn cheesecakes runs me about $15 - $20 depending on what type I make, so that's reserved for special occasions.  I tried a garden -- epic fail.  I've cut back to cheaper cuts of beef or what's on sale, pork on sale and chicken.  I'm not complaining as we don't go hungry, but we spend nearly double what we used to on food.

"Shoulda went to Costco," huh? No kidding. Perhaps Costco is having a sale on proper grammar.

??? Even at Costco -- or Wally World....

Case in point --- (appx. prices are at Wally World) - a gallon of milk around here is appx. $4 and a box of family sized Cheerios is about $5 and a carton of eggs is about $3.80. Bread is about $2.50, a gallon of OJ is around $8.  That comes out to about $20 and change and with 6 kids that'll probably last about 2 days for breakfast - one day cereal, one day, eggs and toast -- so with that on the menu for 7 days you're looking at around $60.00+.  You could switch out bananas or some other fruit for the OJ -- but with 6 kids -- that's about $240 to feed six kids breakfast for the month.  Lunch and dinner....would be even more expensive.

Not everybody has the land for a garden, especially to feed six, nor do many have the luxury to hunt for their own food or fish and Dad probably doesn't have the time to make everything from scratch because he works.

I know of a family of six (4 kids 2 adults) and their bill is similar, in fact things have gotten so ridiculous they are applying for food stamps.  Both of them work and make good money. -- They have a triple fenced lot and they have put in raised garden beds that provides them with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, watermelon, squash, peppers and I don't remember what else  but that cuts their produce bill. What about milk, eggs, meat, bread?? They cook fresh -- kids aren't allowed, cookies, chips, or ice cream except on special occasions -- they can't afford it anyways.
