USS America: The Navy Tried for Weeks to Sink Its Own Aircraft Carrier and Failed
Story by Maya Carlin • 4h •

Summary and Key Points: The USS America, a Kitty Hawk-class aircraft carrier, was intentionally sunk in 2005 after serving the U.S. Navy for three decades.

-Instead of decommissioning, the Navy used the carrier for a controlled explosion study to understand its resilience.

-The ship, known for its service in the Vietnam War and Middle East crises, demonstrated significant durability.

-The findings contributed to future carrier designs. USS America now rests 17,000 feet below the Atlantic Ocean, symbolizing its enduring legacy.

As was clearly shown with the battleship Bismarck, you don't have to sink a monster ship to render it useless. **nononono*

USS Kitty Hawk was commissioned in 1961, so a mid or late 1950s design. She was extremely difficult to sink, even when utterly undefended, but the anti-carrier chatterers want people to believe designs 5 decades newer and more robust are fragile?
I am not and never have been a leftist.

In a real war, with a real "enemy", that is determined to win, you don't need to "sink" a carrier any more.

Just get a tactical nuke within a mile or so, and detonate it.

How much of that carrier will be left?
