Nolte: Almost Half of U.S. Electric Car Owners Regret Purchase

A consumer research group surveyed electric vehicle (EV) owners all around the world and found 46 percent of American EV owners regret their purchase and are “very likely” to switch back to the internal combustion engine (ICE).

Around the world, 29 percent of EV owners said they will go back to the ICE. The top concerns are the lack of  a reliable charging infrastructure, the costs involved in owning an EV, and anxiety about long-distance trips.

Philipp Kampshoff, leader of the consulting firm Center for Future Mobility, told Automotive News he was surprised by the 49 percent number in the U.S.  “I didn’t expect that,” he said. “I thought, ‘Once an EV buyer, always an EV buyer.'”

The research group, McKinsey & Company, spoke to 30,000 consumers across 15 countries and found that:

    Twenty-one percent of global respondents do not want to ever switch to an EV. Among those, 33 percent cited charging concerns.
    Charging concerns are exacerbated by range-related expectations. Consumers’ minimum range expectations have grown to 291.4 miles today from 270 miles in 2022. The range of in-market products has not grown as quickly, McKinsey said.

“[C]onsumers are slightly more willing to consider electrified vehicles than they were two years ago,” per Automotive News. “Thirty-eight percent of non-EV owners say they anticipate that a plug-in hybrid or full battery electric will be their next vehicle. That’s up from 37 percent in 2022.”

But a one percent increase from 37 to 38 percent is not what EV advocates had been hoping for.

Well, an EV could work for my 21-22-mile round-trip daily commute or my wife's ~19-mile rt daily commute, but many EVs could not do San Jose to Sacramento round-trip without charging and with confidence. Fewer could do San Jose-Fresno without a charge, and San Jose-Reno round trip would be a nope. With an ICE vehicle, refills are 5 or 10 minutes, with a restroom visit and/or food stop here or there. The range limit would come down to the driver(s) sleep cycle(s).

see, this is above and beyond simple "buyer's remorse". These regrets are by people who have been there, done that, and I'd guess they would tend to lean more to the left that other consumers, so if they're sorry, that speaks volumes.

I thought about buying one a couple of years ago just to dick around, then decided it was just another one of my stupid ideas. I was right. Maybe in twenty or thirty more years if I'm and civilization is still around.

The first buyers of EV’s were their most passionate fans, and presumably the people-most-likely to love them, and in the best position to use them. Yet, when surveyed, 49% of Australians who owned an EV and 46% in the US said they want to go back to an internal combustion engine for their next car.

And the US and Australia are two nations where nearly everyone has a home-garage or driveway which makes EV ownership a bit easier (as long as the house doesn’t catch fire). Yet even with this cheaper and easier form of charging half the EV owners don’t want another one.

McKinsey & Co surveyed 30,000 people in 15 countries and were said to be surprised at the result.

I see 2 of my neighbors go to work on EVs. One on an EV bike and the other an EV motorcycle. I live around 15 walking minutes from the airport. If I worked there I'd sure want to use an EV.

I made an electric off road go kart yrs ago for my son. Not many go karts have reverse. But now they sell all sort of battery cars for the youngsters. I started making a hill climbing/ mud bogging EV minibike. I don't have much more to finish it.

My son was talking about getting an EV for his work drive from Brownsville to Boca Chica as they had plenty of chargers at work. But now he went independent and will be working all over the country, with possibilities to work overseas.
