Russia has moved the vast majority of its ground forces previously stationed near Finland to the war in Ukraine, the Finnish public broadcaster Yle reported on June 19, citing an undisclosed Finnish military intelligence source.

These revelations stand in contrast to previous claims by Russia on reinforcing its troops near the Finnish border in response to the Nordic country's entry into NATO.

"On average, 80% of the equipment and soldiers have been transferred to the war in Ukraine," the high-ranking military intelligence source told Yle.

According to the source, the situation is similar in other Russian regions except for Moscow Oblast. This concerns mainly the Ground Forces, as air defenses, the Air Force, and the Navy remain relatively well-manned, Yle reported.

[/Sarcasm] More seriously, given Ukraine's demonstrated ability to reach out and "touch" St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) and its environs, keeping air defense forces in place makes sense defensively, and those distant bases are lower risk as bases for attacking Ukraine.

Indeed. Russia is having to gut defenses in other areas to sustain their invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory. That Russia is gutting defenses around Finland is due to two factors: ease of movement, because Ukraine is relatively close to Finland; Russia knows that NATO member Finland, and therefore NATO, is not a threat to invade Russia.

Putin's blather about NATO being a threat and "needing" a "buffer zone" is nothing but a thin smokescreen for his efforts to rebuild Stalin's empire.

Russia gutted their defenses proximate to St. Petersburg two years ago. Two stories I recall from back then were abandoned border outposts on the Finnish border where people were entering Russia unopposed. The other was some 'urban explorers' walking into some airbase near Pskov and not being able to find anyone. They thought the airbase was closed but it was just not manned.
