SpaceX Starship Integrated Flight Test 5
« on: June 06, 2024, 06:23:52 pm »
SpaceX Starship integrated flight test 5 (IFT-5) will be the fifth integrated flight test of a prototype Starship launch vehicle. The prototype vehicles planned to be flown are the Ship 30 upper-stage and Booster 12.

SpaceX is expecting to perform the flight test in late June. In April 2024, Musk stated that the flight may involve a catch of the Super Heavy booster with the tower, if B11's 'virtual tower' landing is successful during IFT-4. On June 6th, after IFT-4, he reiterated that.

@Teslaconomics

Starship 5 will be launching in ~1 month & the booster will be caught w/ mechazilla arms (instead of splashing down to the ocean). This will extremely difficult to execute, but if there’s one team to do it, it’s SpaceX.

Ship 30 has been mostly surrounded by scaffolding, to allow workers access to replace its heat shield with an additional ablative layer and stronger heat shield tiles on top of that.

Raptor 3, SN1

Elon Musk
@elonmusk
The amount of work required to simplify the Raptor engine, internalize secondary flow paths and add regenerative cooling for exposed components was staggering.

As a result Raptor 3 doesn’t require any heat shield, eliminating heat shield mass & complexity, as well as the fire suppression system.

It is also lighter, has more thrust and has higher efficiency than Raptor 2.

Truly, a work of art.

SpaceX Call FAA "Unreasonable" As Starship Gets TWO MONTH Delay Because of Fish, & Polaris Returns!

Matt Lowne 9/16/2024

SpaceX continue pressing ahead with Starship and complete the Polaris Dawn mission, a crewed flight carrying four civilian passengers for 5 days, which conducted the first commercial spacewalk, and flew humans higher in Earth’s orbit than anyone since Apollo! The FAA was admonished during a recent hearing for impeding spaceflight innovation with excessive red tape, and SpaceX themselves issued a statement that Starship is being delayed for unreasonable reasons; this all happening while China made big strides towards the development of its ZhuQue 3, after successfully vertically landing a test vehicle. Blue Origin is drawing closer to the maiden flight of New Glenn, where they will attempt the first ever landing for a previously unflown rocket!

SpaceX Breaks Silence On Starship Flight 5 – Sunday Launch & Catch Abort In-Play

WCCFTECH by Ramish Zafar Oct 8, 2024

SpaceX has picked up the pace with its Starship Flight 5 preparations in Texas, as after tank tests yesterday, the firm confirmed on social media that Starship Flight 5 could take place as soon as Monday. The announcement was the first for Starship after SpaceX's previous post confirmed that the launch could be delayed until November because of regulatory approvals.

SpaceX's objectives for Flight 5 shared before today's announcement had included a tower catch for the Super Heavy booster as part of the firm's bid to build the world's first super heavy lift reusable rocket system.

SpaceX Ready To Fly Starship On Sunday Pending Regulatory Approval

SpaceX's post from yesterday night followed a day of Starship full stack testing at the pad. Right now, the upper stage Starship is stacked on the Super Heavy booster, and yesterday, SpaceX filled the booster's tanks with propellant to verify its systems. These tests typically increase in frequency before a launch, indicating that Starship's approval was moving faster than anticipated on the regulatory front.

SpaceX's earlier posts for Starship shared that regulatory approvals for the booster's tower catch and a new splashdown location for the interstage ring were the primary reasons behind the delay. The latest information confirms that a tower catch is still on the cards, indicating that the issues stemming from the sonic boom that had raised regulatory concerns might have been resolved.

However, just because SpaceX plans to catch the Super Heavy booster with the launch tower doesn't mean that a catch is guaranteed to occur. The firm outlined that it accepts "no compromises when it comes to ensuring the safety of the public and our team," which has led it to only attempt a catch "if conditions are right."

FAA approves SpaceX Starship 5 flight set for Sunday

Reuters by David Shepardson 10/12/2024

The Federal Aviation Administration approved a license on Saturday for the launch of SpaceX's Starship 5 set for Sunday after earlier saying it did not expect to make a decision until late November.

Reuters first reported this week the faster than expected timetable after the FAA in September had suggested a much longer review.

SpaceX is targeting Sunday for the launch and said a 30-minute launch window opens at 7:00 a.m. CT (1200 GMT)

The FAA said on Saturday SpaceX had "met all safety, environmental and other licensing requirements for the suborbital test flight" for the fifth test of the Starship and has also approved the Starship 6 mission profile.

Elon Musk: SpaceX Starship IFT-5 Flight Test! Starship Mechazilla Start!

A live webcast of the flight test will begin about 30 minutes before liftoff, which you can watch here. The launch window will open as early as 7:00 a.m. CT. As is the case with all developmental testing, the schedule is dynamic and likely to change.

Flight 4 was a tremendous success. A fully successful ascent was followed by the first ever booster soft-landing in the Gulf of Mexico and Starship making it through a brilliant reentry, before its own landing burn and splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

The fifth flight test of Starship will aim to take another step towards full and rapid reusability. The primary objectives will be attempting the first ever return to launch site and catch of the Super Heavy booster and another Starship reentry and landing burn, aiming for an on-target splashdown of Starship in the Indian Ocean.

SpaceX rocket booster successfully lands in Texas after test launch

DAILYMAIL.COM
By Laura Parnaby
13 October 2024

SpaceX has successfully launched its enormous Starship rocket on Sunday on its boldest test flight yet, catching the returning booster back at the pad with mechanical arms.

Towering almost 400 feet (121 meters), the empty rocket blasted off at sunrise from the southern tip of Texas near the Mexican border.

It arced over the Gulf of Mexico like the four Starships before it that ended up being destroyed, either soon after liftoff or while ditching into the sea.

The last one in June was the most successful yet, completing its flight without exploding.

Elon Musk, 13 years ago: A fully and rapidly reusable rocket is barely possible. SpaceX is going to try to do it. We could fail, but we're going to try to do it.

“The pivotal breakthrough that's necessary, that some company has to come up with to make life multiplanetary, is a fully and rapidly reusable orbit-class rocket.

This is a very difficult thing to do because we live on a planet where that is just barely possible. If gravity were a little lower, it would be easy. If it was a little higher, it would be impossible.

It's just a very tough engineering problem. I wasn't sure it could be solved for a while. But then, relatively recently, probably in the last twelve months or so, I've come to the conclusion that it can be solved.

And I think, SpaceX is going to try to do it. Now, we could fail. I'm not saying we're certain of success here, but we're going to try to do it. And we have a design that, on paper, doing the calculations, doing the simulations, it does work.

And now, we need to make sure that those simulations and reality agree, because generally when they don't, reality wins.”

It is an awesome accomplishment. I'm just hoping some of the sci-fi we read as kids can come alive before we pass.
Elon's going to have to fight the globalists, though. They are already fighting him subtly, and will likely ramp it up.
They aren't going to like the idea of any escaping their grasp, especially not a planet or moon away (where attacks can be met by 'throwing rocks').

It is an awesome accomplishment. I'm just hoping some of the sci-fi we read as kids can come alive before we pass.
Well, not all the sci-fi we read about, like Asimov's robots or HG Wells's War of the Worlds.

But I do know what you are thinking.

Elon Musk
@elonmusk

Starship achieved a precise, soft landing in the ocean, paving the way for return to launch site and being caught by the tower arms, like the booster.

Full & rapid reusability improves the cost of access to orbit & beyond by >10,000%.

It is the fundamental technology breakthrough needed to make life multiplanetary and for us to become a true spacefaring civilization.

I rented a $17k lens to photograph the recent starship launch in detail. When I aligned and stitched all the photos I took together, it made a unique video showing the entire event from launch to catch.

I hope to ride on Starship one day.

SpaceX's Starship booster was '1 second away' from aborting epic launch-tower catch

Space.com by Mike Wall 10/28/2024

'We were one second away from that tripping and telling the rocket to abort and try to crash into the ground next to the tower.'

SpaceX's historic rocket catch earlier this month was even more dramatic than it looked.

That catch occurred on Oct. 13, during the fifth test flight of SpaceX's Starship megarocket. Starship's huge first-stage booster, known as Super Heavy, came back to Earth about seven minutes after liftoff, nestling next to its launch tower, which secured the rocket with its "chopstick" arms.

But that epic moment almost didn't happen: Super Heavy was just one second away from aborting the launch-tower landing and crashing into a patch of nearby ground, SpaceX engineers told company founder and CEO Elon Musk recently.

Musk revealed part of that conversation on X on Friday (Oct. 25), in a post that showed the billionaire's progress in the online game Diablo IV. That post depicted three minutes of Musk's Diablo IV gameplay, which occurred while he was talking to three unnamed SpaceX engineers about the Starship test flight.

"I wanted to be really up-front about scary sh*t that happened and what we're doing about it, because I think that's our focus on getting to Flight 6," one of those engineers tells Musk at the beginning of the posted conversation. That focus, the engineer adds, is "on booster risk reduction, rather than Ship envelope expansion." (Ship is the 165-foot-tall, or 50-meter, Starship upper stage.)

The engineer then goes into detail about the "scary sh*t."

"We had a misconfigured spin gas abort that didn't have quite the right ramp-up time for bringing up spin pressure," he explains. "And we were one second away from that tripping and telling the rocket to abort and try to crash into the ground next to the tower instead of [landing at] the tower — like, erroneously tell a healthy rocket to not try that catch."

"Wow," Musk says as he hears the news.

Wow. It's almost like turning your head as the bullet goes by...a miss is as good as a mile...well, almost.

Just another bug to iron out.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
