Despite Court ‘Guilty’ Verdict, Trump Gains On Biden In Court Of Voter Opinion: I&I/TIPP Poll
Terry Jones
June 3, 2024

The stunning felony conviction of former President Donald Trump garnered headlines around the world and created sharp political arguments across the U.S. But did it affect the presidential race? The answer is yes. It seems to have actually helped Trump, the June I&I/TIPP Poll shows.

The poll was taken from Wednesday, May 29, through Friday, May 31. The verdict against Trump in New York state court was rendered on Thursday, May 30. So a significant share of the 1,675 registered voters who took the national online I&I/TIPP Poll actually knew that Trump had been found guilty of 34 felony counts.

So did Trump’s guilty verdict change minds, weakening his support? On the contrary, it seems.

In the head-to-head poll between President Joe Biden and Trump, it’s now a statistical toss-up, 41% to 41%. But that’s an improvement for Trump from May, when he trailed Biden by 2 percentage points in that month’s I&I/TIPP poll (42% Biden to 40% Trump). The June poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points.

ABC News Poll: Trump’s Favorability Slightly Increases After Guilty Verdict

Wendell Husebø 3 Jun 2024

Former President Donald Trump’s favorability rating slightly increased, but remained statistically unchanged from March 2024, after Democrat Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg successfully convicted Trump last week, an ABC News poll found Sunday.

The survey suggests Americans have not changed their feelings about Trump after the conviction that many legal commentators believe was secured by novel legal theory. Trump pledged to appeal the verdict Friday. Sentencing is scheduled for mid-July before the Republican Party’s convention.

The poll sampled 781 adults from May 31 to June 1 with a 3.7 point margin of error. Trump’s trial ended on May 30.

Thirty-one percent of Americans view Trump favorably, up from 29 percent in March.

In contrast, Biden’s favorability sunk one point from 33 percent to 32 percent.

Biden defended the conviction of his political opponent on Friday and claimed it was “reckless” for his gagged political opponent to call it “rigged.”

So Far, Little Movement in Post-Conviction Public Opinion -- But...
Guy Benson

Former President Donald Trump was convicted on 34 counts by a New York City jury last Thursday, a verdict that I analyzed here.  In that piece, I discussed the outcome's impact on public opinion, writing that "polling suggests it could all be a relative non-event for voters, net-net.  But perhaps the stark reality of it, rather than the hypothetical nature of it, will change that.  There are several plausible scenarios -- from Trump negative, to Trump positive, to neutral.  I just don't know, and I'm skeptical of confident predictions about if and how public opinion will move."  Indeed, an NPR survey released just prior to the verdict found that the overwhelming majority of voters said the trial's result wouldn't impact their voting decision in November at all.  Seventeen percent did say a conviction would make them less likely to support Trump, but nearly as many -- 15 percent -- said it would make them more likely to do so.  A relative wash, at least in theory.

What's unclear is how many of the 'less/more likely' respondents were already hard partisans deciding that Trump being found guilty would only harden their partisanship, versus persuadable voters either being turned off by the notion of supporting a 'convicted felon' or being so outraged by a perceived miscarriage of justice that they were pushed in the direction of its target.  We are now getting some post-trial polling in, and the top-lines look mixed:

This poll has Biden 16 points underwater.  No polling era incumbent other than Truman has recovered from that kind of disapproval, and the polling was skewed to favor republicans back then.  Carter lost, HW Bush lost, Trump lost with better numbers, and Johnson had enough sense to drop out.  Ford actually had positive approval, though he trailed Carter by 30 at one point.

Unfortunately, neither of the two are remotely interested in doing anything about inflation.

Biden will probably push for more “Inflation Reduction Acts” and green initiatives if reelected and Trump wants a weaker dollar  and place more tariffs on imports.

Both want a hell of a lot more government spending

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

I really haven't paid attention or heard of Trump's recent push for more government spending, but at any rate we will likely wind up with one or the other as our next president.

In as much as I have issues with Trump, he was wrongfully convicted by a kangaroo court (at best) and I hope he will soon be fully exonerated.

Praying for a miracle that the pendulum starts swinging to the right.
