Congress is weighing automatic registration for wartime draft
Registration for Selective Service is already mandatory but a proposed law would automatically sign up men between 18 and 25 years old for national draft rolls.

American men ages 18 to 25 would be automatically signed up for the draft if a measure making its way through Congress becomes law.


The proposal by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan would mean that men would be automatically registered for the draft when they turn 18. Under current federal law, all American male citizens and green card holders 18 to 25 years old must register with the Selective Service, but the requirement to do so falls on individuals. Those roles would be the basis of a military draft if Congress or the President decided to implement one, which Houlahan’s proposed measure does not address.

Women would continue to be exempt from Selective Service registration under the proposal submitted as an amendment to the national defense policy bill for fiscal year 2025.

During debate on her amendment last week, Houlahan argued that the measure would allow Congress to spend more money on “readiness and towards mobilization” instead of “education and advertising campaigns driven to register people.”

Congress is nothing but a bunch of sexist pigs.  Women have earned the right to be drafted too and risk the honor of going to war and being blown to bits.  They have worked hard for the right. *****rollingeyes*****

I thought registration laws were already in place.

Only us post Vietnam War kids born in 1957, 58, and 59 didn't have to.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

Why is Congress suddenly interested in automagically registering folks for a future draft?

What has made a do-nothing, be-nothing Congress get off it's dynfunctional fat ass to dedicate time and resources into thinking about the next draft?  Are they planning a future war?

I don't think it's automatic? I turned 18 in 1994, i had to do it manually.

In 1974 I had to go down to the Selective Service office in the P.O. and register and I got my draft card at that time.

I had the card up until my last move when it went missing.  My status was 1-H

At least I didn't have to wait with thee others on the Group W bench.

How about automatically register anyone sent to juvee court, male or female... Then three hits at juvee court makes you a "volunteer" when you turn 18...

I got a letter requesting my presence to register.  They prolly don't  do that anymore.

You don't need a Weatherman to see what's eventually coming down the road.

I'm probably the only active member of this forum who actually WAS drafted.

And I may be the only person you ever meet who was drafted not once, but TWO times (in 1969 and then again in 1970).
