FDOT decides to light Florida bridges red, white, and blue this summerAccording to a post made by the Florida Department of Transportation’s Secretary Jared W. Perdue, from Memorial Day through Labor Day Florida’s bridges will be lit with the colors red, white, and blue. Perdue’s post said its part of Governor Ron DeSantis’ 2024 Florida Freedom Summer.
In a separate post made by Governor DeSantis, he referred to the initiative as “kicking off summer the right way.” Florida families will be able to visit state parks free of charge for Memorial Day Weekend and the sales tax will be lifted for recreational items.
According to the City of Sarasota, this will be for all bridges maintained by FDOT which includes the Ringling Bridge. The city explained FDOT physically controls the light displays for bridges they maintain.
In just a few weeks, the Ringling Bridge was supposed to light up in orange for National Gun Violence Awareness Month. That would have been from June 8 to 10.
“80 percent of American people believe there should be stronger gun laws and are concerned about safety. In the meantime, a lot of other organizations also have the bridge lit up for different days and events,” said Carol Rescigno, the President of Brady Sarasota.
Rescigno said lighting up a bridge won’t save a life, but it does matter.
“The more chance you have to make things better. That was the bottom line. It’s about safety,” said Rescigno.
The Sunshine Skyway Bridge will also follow the color scheme.....................
