NRC: Brussels scraps even more green agricultural rules

Once again, the European Commission is scrapping green regulations in response to farmers' dissatisfaction. On Friday, Brussels made a proposal for a major adjustment of the European agricultural rules that in practice mainly boils down to: only a minimum of green requirements. In recent weeks, the European Commission has already announced other 'emergency measures', but now it wants to suspend nature rules for the long term.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that she would take "strong and swift action" to "support our farmers at a time when they are facing countless challenges and concerns."

The proposal can count on broad support from European member states, but it comes at a piquant time. Earlier this week, the European Environment Agency published a comprehensive report on the effects of climate change, highlighting the urgency of a green transformation of the agricultural sector. Nature and environmental organizations reacted indignantly and disappointed to the new changes on Friday.
