Bananas are set to get more expensive as climate change hits a much-loved fruit, one of the world’s top experts from the industry tells BBC News.

Pascal Liu, senior economist at the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, says climate impacts pose an "enormous threat" to supply, compounding the impacts of fast-spreading diseases.

The World Banana Forum meets in Rome on Tuesday to discuss the challenges.

Some UK shops recently experienced banana shortages due to sea storms.


The UK alone imports around 5 billion bananas ever year, with around 90% sold through the major supermarkets.

Here in Michigan, the banana industry is nil because its too cold much of the year, I assume.  So, wouldn't warmer temps mean better growing seasons for bananas, create excesses, and lower prices? :pondering:

'Man made CO2 emissions' equals more CO2 which is what plants survive on.
More CO2 equals more bananas and more food in general.

Ir was not unusual in the past for species of trees to grow where they no longer do today, because the climate changed. The only Redwoods in North Dakota have been petrified since they grew here, and I'd bet that humans didn't have diddley-squat to do with that episode of climate change.
