Activists are heading to East Texas to help Speaker Phelan’s GOP primary challenger David Covey.
A busload of North Texas conservative activists is heading to the state House district of Speaker Dade Phelan this weekend to campaign for his Republican primary rival David Covey.
The activists are among Republicans from across the state who are working to defeat Phelan in House District 21—which covers Orange, Jasper, and Jefferson counties—to ensure he cannot serve a third term as speaker of the Texas House.
Grassroots Republicans are disgusted with Phelan’s legislative leadership for everything from empowering Democrats with House committee chair positions to overseeing the impeachment of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Last weekend, members of the Republican Party of Texas’ governing body censured Phelan, following earlier censures by the Orange and Jasper County GOP executive committees.
A state party censure strips RPT financial support from Phelan’s campaign and opens the door to the party campaigning against him.
