Climate Scientists Want Space Umbrellas The Size Of Argentina To Blot Out The Sun

city sunA team of climate scientists wants to launch enormous umbrellas into space to reduce the Earth’s exposure to the sun and fight climate change, The New York Times reported Friday.

The underlying idea is that large parasols could be positioned in space such that they marginally reduce the intensity of sunlight the Earth receives and thereby mitigate some global warming, the Times reported. [emphasis, links added]

To block out enough radiation, a single sunshade would need to be approximately the size of Argentina — nearly one million square miles — and would weigh about 2.5 million tons, so scientists are looking to prove the idea could work by first producing a 100-square foot prototype with the help of $10 to $20 million of funding.

Dr. Yoram Rozen, a physics professor and the Asher Space Research Institute’s director at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, is leading the team of scientists pushing the idea, according to the Times.

By means of shrewd lies, unremittingly repeated, it is possible to make people believe that heaven is hell - and hell heaven. The greater the lie, the more readily it will be believed.

The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan.

Since they can be furled if they overshoot the desired effect, this would be a better approach than hobbling the world's energy economy with the delusional drive to replace fossil fuels with "renewables".

I say if they promise to let us keep using gasoline and diesel for our vehicles, aviation fuel for aircraft, oil and LNG for ships, natural gas in our furnaces and stoves, wood stoves and fireplaces if we find them convenient, provided they are designed so that if their orbit decays they burn up on reentry into the atmosphere before they fall to an altitude that would interfere with commercial aviation, we fund their space umbrellas.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Like we need more cold at this latitude.

Recall the effect of cold on the O-rings of the Challenger's SRBs?

I do. Fine if the proponents of this nonsense get to ride with those next to the Liquid fuel tanks.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

...and without the sun how will things grow and how will mankind get their much needed Vitamin D?

The climate whackados who call themselves scientists need to just chill, let Mother Nature take its course and leave things alone!
Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

And other aspects of shading the sun that we don't understand that can be truly dangerous. Anyway, doubt this will happen, unless it gets really really got in the future.

Gee whiz, can they be sued by all the people who will have had their photovoltaics screwed with by blocking sunlight?

So if I understand this correctly, while they praise the virtues of solar power and push for its use, they are going to block the sun?

I don't know, but what really scares me is that nobody seems to be able to land on the moon which is something accomplished decades ago, but somehow someone/someones are going to place a ginormous umbrella(remember when it was going to be a mirror) in space and we are supposed to believe it will function flawlessly?(If flawlessly means ecological disaster) I wonder if these 'climate scientists' would be so gung ho if the penalty for failure of their plan was being turned over to the angry mob?
