New Frame of Climate Change Consequences: Deadly Diarrhoea
From one of our correspondents.
Due to climate change, diarrhoea threatens to make a deadly advance again, according to Dutch doctors. The Amsterdam UMC receives millions to stop the increase in diarrhoeal diseases. Together with the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development, it leads a global consortium that looks for solutions. A European subsidy of 6.5 million euros has been awarded for this purpose.
'The need is high. Sudden heavy rainfall, floods and longer periods of drought are the perfect breeding ground for the spread of bacteria and parasites',
writes the AD.
Children, the elderly and the sick are particularly vulnerable to diarrhoea. In children under the age of five, it is the third most common cause of death worldwide, with more than 500,000 deaths each year. In recent decades, significant steps have been taken in the fight against diarrhoea, but that progress is under pressure, according to the researchers.
