Host Jake Tapper asked, “So, the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have resulted in major disruptions to shipping while endangering U.S. servicemembers. This has been going on for nearly three months, since October 7, when Hamas attacked Israel. Why did the U.S. and U.K. wait until now, why now to strike?”

Singh responded, “Well, to that, last night’s strike is when we felt the most comfortable that we would be able to effectively disrupt and degrade Houthi capabilities that have been targeting commercial merchant vessels, ships that have been transiting throughout the Red Sea. A U.S. cargo ship was hit Monday in the Red Sea by a ballistic missile fired by the Iranian-backed rebel group the Houthis, according to the Pentagon.

The reported attack is another incident in the international shipping channel shortly after the start of the Israel-Hamas war in early-October 2023. In response, the U.S. has fired missiles over the past several days into Yemen, where the group, which sympathizes with the Palestinian-affiliate Hamas, purportedly has headquarters.   

The strike hit the Gibraltar Eagle and no injuries have been reported, according to U.S. Central Command.

“As a result of the impact the vessel suffered limited damage to a cargo hold but is stable and is heading out of the area,” the group said, according to CNN. “All seafarers onboard the vessel are confirmed to be uninjured.”  .  .  .

US Carries Out Another Strike on Houthis in Yemen

As Jazz pointed out this morning, the Houthis don’t seem to have been dissuaded from attacks on US targets thus far. In the last couple days they have launched attacks on a US commercial vessel and at a US Navy destroyer. Fortunately, the missile aimed at the destroyer was shot down. Today, the US hit another target inside Yemen as the Houthis were preparing another strike.

    The strikes on Tuesday were aimed at four missiles that were being prepared to be fired from their launchers and posed an imminent threat to merchant vessels and Navy ships, the command said in a statement…

    Residents in the area said on Monday that they saw Houthi missiles being fired from remote and mountainous parts of Mukayras, a Houthi-controlled town in central Yemen, on Friday and Monday…

    On Tuesday, the Houthis fired an anti-ship ballistic missile into the Red Sea, hitting the Zografia, a Maltese-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier, a Defense Department official said. The ship’s crew reported no injuries. The vessel remained seaworthy, and continued its journey, the official said.

On Friday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “America Reports,” Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh responded to a question on why the U.S. hasn’t taken the Houthis out of commission by stating that “it’s really up to the Houthis when they make the calculation to stop” attacking.

Co-host John Roberts asked, “The U.S. military’s got the capability of putting the Houthis out of business this afternoon, why don’t we just do it?”

Singh answered, “Look, it’s really up to the Houthis for when they decide to stop their attacks. We know they still have capabilities. By no means did we say we have eliminated every single thing that they have, but we have degraded and completely disrupted some of their capabilities, including as recently as early this morning, when we took action against anti-ship ballistic missiles that were getting ready to launch at U.S. ships and merchant ships that are transiting that Red Sea area. We still know that the Houthis do maintain and retain some capabilities, of course. But it’s really up to the Houthis when they make the calculation to stop. And so, that’s why you’re seeing the dynamic strikes that we’re continuing to launch over the past few days.”

Later, she added that the U.S. does factor avoiding a regional war into all of its decisions.

But frankly, we could not allow them to continue to attack vessels passing by in the Red Sea. And President Biden approached this in a deliberate way. He assembled a coalition of a dozen countries committed to trying to stop the Houthis. He went to the United Nations and got a Security Council resolution authorizing this multinational action against the Houthis. This is distinct from a number of other recent conflicts, in that it is something that is in the interests of everyone, including the Chinese and the Indians, the Saudis, even the Russians, it is in no one’s interests — except perhaps Iran — for the Houthis to disturb global commerce and for thousands and thousands of ships to be redirected around the Horn of Africa.”

U.S. personnel wounded in missile attack on Iraq airbase by Iranian-backed rebels

Several U.S. military personnel were injured in a missile attack Saturday night by Iranian-backed rebels on Al-Asad Airbase in Iraq, the Pentagon said.

At about 6:30 p.m. local time, multiple ballistic missiles and rockets were fired by Iranian-backed militants from western Iraq, U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted to social media.

The base's air defense systems intercepted "most of the missiles," but "others impacted the base," CENTCOM reported.

Multiple U.S. personnel were being evaluated for traumatic brain injuries, CENTCOM said, and at least one Iraqi soldier was also wounded. No further details were immediately provided.

This marks the 144th attack on U.S. troops stationed in Iraq and Syria since Hamas launched its violent Oct. 7 assault on Israel and sparked the Israel-Hamas war. It's also one of the largest such attacks, and the second in which militia groups have fired ballistic missiles.

US INTENT ON DEGRADING HOUTHI FIREPOWER: The United States is preparing to mount a sustained bombing campaign against targets in Houthi-controlled western Yemen that will last until the attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea are deterred or Houthi missile stocks are exhausted.

The plans for an open-ended military campaign follow a meeting of senior officials convened by the White House last week, according to a report by the Washington Post, which quoted one unnamed senior administration official as saying, “We’re not sure that they’re going to stop immediately, but we are certainly trying to degrade and destroy their capabilities.”

The U.S. military has conducted strikes against Houthi anti-ship missiles five of the last seven days, with the latest strike Saturday against a single target. Last Thursday, President Joe Bien conceded the airstrikes have yet to produce the desired effect. “Are they stopping the Houthis? No. Are they going to continue? Yes,” he said.

The US and Britain on Monday launched a punishing wave of fresh airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthi terrorists in Yemen in retaliation for attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

The bombings targeting the rebels’ strongholds — including drone and missile sites and even an underground bunker — were the eighth US-led strikes in 11 days.

Monday’s offensive also marked the second time the US and Britain have launched joint retaliatory strikes on Houthi-linked locations.

“President Biden has directed the Secretary of Defense in coordination with Australia, Bahrain, Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom to execute precise strikes against select Houthi targets in Yemen,” a senior US defense official said on a call with reporters.

“This action aims to deter further regional maritime attacks, and diminish Houthi capabilities.”
