There is homosexuality as part of the plot. Perhaps a lot more than needed, and always with some 'message', but at least it isn't an egregious add on.
Then there is that which does not advance any plot element. It is intended to desensitize the viewer who finds at least element of the lifestyle repugnant. That's what I call gratuitous faggotry, and that ends the show for me. If I wanted to watch two women or two guys sucking face (or more) in my living room, I know some folks I could call and invite to a party, or I could download that.
I agree, that it is unnecessary, takes a serious chance on ofending people, ruins some shows that had potential, and is a money loser for Hollywood, who is appealing to its own bubble at the expense of many others.
The same mistake has been made, repeatedly, by people who risk (often with disastrous results) offending the majority of their clientele, from JC Pennys to Target to Anheuser-Busch.
