Greg Gumbel, legendary sports broadcaster, dead at 78

Greg Gumbel, a longtime sportscaster who called the NFL for CBS for decades and served as the studio’s host during the NCAA Tournament, has reportedly died, Emmy-winning producer Dan Forer wrote on Facebook on Friday.

Gumbel was 78 years old.

No cause of death was revealed.

Aww, that's too bad, he was a good broadcaster. I remember when CBS lost their NFL contract in the 90s (Fox outbid them), and he got very emotional at the end of their last game broadcast. It was touching.

Marc Huestis, a friend of Hussey's since 2008, told CBS News that the actress had cancer.

Hussey was 15 when director Franco Zeffirelli cast her in his adaptation of the William Shakespeare tragedy after spotting her onstage in the play "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie," which also starred Vanessa Redgrave.

"Romeo and Juliet" won two Oscars and Hussey won a Golden Globe for best new actress for her part as Juliet, opposite British actor Leonard Whiting, who was 16 at the time.  ...

Olivia Hussey Eisley Dies: ‘Romeo And Juliet’ Actress Was 73

BTW, Olivia Hussy had had two bouts with breast cancer, the second, IIRC, after a double mastectomy. So she may have died of a recurrence.

Former President Jimmy Carter, a man who redefined what a post-presidency could be, died Sunday. He was 100.

Carter, who lived longer than any other U.S. president, entered home hospice care in Plains, Georgia in February 2023 after a series of short hospital stays.

The only Georgian ever elected to the White House, Carter left office after a single term that was highlighted by forging peace between Israel and Egypt, but was overshadowed by the Iran hostage crisis. In the decades after, his reputation grew through his and wife Rosalynn Carter’s work at the Carter Center in Atlanta and his philanthropic causes such as Habitat for Humanity.

“People will be celebrating Jimmy Carter for hundreds of years. His reputation is only going to grow,” Rice University history professor Douglas Brinkley wrote in his book “The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter.”

No link but Jimmy Carter passed a few hours ago.  Lived long enough to see he wasn't the worst president in his life time.
