WASHINGTON -- The U.S. military will make "significant progress" toward reclaiming a World War II-era airfield on the Pacific island of Tinian in the upcoming months, an air force general said, part of an initiative to disperse aircraft across the Indo-Pacific region as China's missile threat continues to grow.

The U.S. Air Force is stepping up construction at the Tinian North airfield, once used by the largest B-29 bomber fleet during World War II, and at the Tinian International airfield, Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, commander of the Pacific Air Forces, said in an interview on Wednesday.

"If you pay attention in the next few months, you will see significant progress, especially at Tinian North," Wilsbach said...

Does this mean they are going to just take it away from whatever natives may live there,without compensating them or even getting their permission?

Or is the island now completely abandoned and  not claimed by any government. This SEEMS very unlikely to me.

I guess we abandoned the base eons ago, so the jungle likely reclaimed the land and destroyed the buildings, but I don't know for sure.  Sounds like they will have to rebuild from the ground up.

Tinian is one of the Mariana Islands, a US owned territory.  There is a native population, so I suspect there will be negotiations for the real estate.

You would think it would be a  protected historic site,and a tourist stop.

Not that many Japanese would want to visit there.
