White House: We Don’t Support Israel Operating in South Gaza ‘Until They Have Factored in’ ‘Additional Civilians’

On Friday’s broadcast of Bloomberg TV’s “Balance of Power,” White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby stated that the White House doesn’t support Israel operating against Hamas in the southern portion of Gaza “unless or until they have factored in all those additional civilians” in the area and all civilians in the area.

Kirby said, “We have made two points here: One, we’ve told the Israelis, very consistently, we don’t support southern operations unless or until they have factored in all those additional civilians — actually, all civilians, but noting that there are now hundreds of thousands more civilians. Number two, … we have also urged them to think about how to do this in a way that keeps those civilians safe. Now, I don’t want to get into whether there [are] safe zones called for or what that could look like, but we certainly want to see them pursue these operations in a way that properly accounts for that civilian population, and [that], to the maximum degree that it can, inoculates them from these combat operations, so that they’re not in harm’s way, that they’re not caught in the crossfire between Israel and Hamas.”

Israel bombards southern Gaza with airstrikes

 Israeli airstrikes and artillery fire hit targets in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday as Israel advances its campaign to eradicate Hamas.

Fighting resumed on Friday after a cease-fire agreement between the two sides collapsed. The Israeli military said that in the last 24 hours combined attacks by its ground, air and naval forces had hit 400 militant targets and killed an unspecified number of Hamas fighters.

The Hamas-led Health Ministry in Gaza claims at least 178 people have been killed by Israel since the end of the truce, adding to the more than 13,300 Palestinians killed during the war. At least 1,200 Israelis were killed in the Oct. 7 terror attack that started the conflict.

The warring sides blamed each other for the collapse of the seven-day truce, during which Hamas had released hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

United Nations officials have decried the renewed fighting, saying it will worsen an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

"Hell on Earth has returned to Gaza," said Jens Laerke, a spokesman for the U.N. humanitarian office in Geneva.

Netanyahu's office announces recall of cease-fire negotiators from Qatar

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Saturday that a Mossad team sent to Qatar to negotiate for another cease-fire with Hamas would return to Israel after reaching an "impasse."

"Following the impasse in the negotiations and at the direction of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Mossad head David Barnea ordered his team in Doha to return to Israel," the prime minster's office said in a statement.

"The terrorist organization Hamas did not fulfill its part of the agreement, which included the release of all children and women according to a list that was forwarded to Hamas and approved by it," it added.

Under the previous cease-fire arrangement, Israel secured the release of 84 women and children held captive in the Gaza Strip after the Oct. 7 massacre.

However, the truce ended Friday after both sides accused the other of violating its terms. Israel said Hamas refused to release all of the women it promised. A Palestinian official told Reuters the truce fell apart over female Israeli soldiers.

Vice President Kamala Harris vowed that the US will not allow the forced relocation of Palestinians during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, her office confirmed on Saturday.

"Under no circumstances will the United States permit the forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank, the besiegement of Gaza, or the redrawing of the borders of Gaza," Harris said, according to CNN.

During the meeting, Sisi and Harris discussed plans for the Gaza Strip in the aftermath of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, “including efforts on reconstruction, security, and governance," the statement from Harris’ office read.

"She (Harris) emphasized that these efforts can only succeed if they are pursued in the context of a clear political horizon for the Palestinian people towards a state of their own led by a revitalized Palestinian Authority and have significant support from the international community and the countries of the region,” the write-up insisted.

The IDF struck “over 400 terrorist targets in Gaza” since its weeklong cease-fire with Hamas ended.

Fifty targets within the area of Khan Yunis in the southern part of the Gaza Strip were also hit, the branch posted on X Saturday morning.

Fliers were dropped in Khan Yunis, warning residents to evacuate from the "combat fighting zone" as Israel claimed Hamas violated the truce agreement.

The Israeli Air Force also struck “Islamic Jihad’s operational command center inside a mosque,” while the navy took out multiple targets of Hamas’s Naval Forces.

No more hostages released without full cease-fire: Hamas official

Hamas has refused to release any more Israeli hostages without a full cease-fire and the release of all Palestinian prisoners, the head of the terror group’s political bureau told Al Jazeera Saturday.

"Israel has decided that it does not want to renew contacts for a prisoner exchange based on new terms," Saleh al-Arouri told the outlet, according to Haaretz.

"Israel insists that we still have women and children, even though we clarified that we handed over all the women and children in our possession, and now only men and soldiers remain. The adults we have, from our perspective, have served in the army, and some of them are still in reserve duty,” he claimed.

Hamas may agree to a body exchange, but would need time "to retrieve the bodies of the Israelis, some of whom were killed in Israel's bombings in Gaza,” he added.

Earlier on Saturday, a source told CNN that talks between Israel and Hamas broke down over a disagreement about women hostages.

Hamas supposedly pushed to release a group of male hostages – possibly for a different set of terms – but Israel argued that all the women needed to be released first, the source explained.

Israel and the US believe that Hamas still has several women – many of them between ages 20 and 30 – CNN previously said.

Hamas insists that some of the women it is holding were considered part of the IDF, which Israel denies.

Earlier on Saturday, Israel announced that it had recalled its Mossad negotiators from the talks in Qatar because the process reached a “dead end.”

• Hamas refused to release the number of hostages they promised in the agreement framework.
• Hamas refused to release women and children.
• Hamas fired rockets at Israel.

Apparently, there is another poster here who is confused as well.  But truth matters.  Lies should always be challenged.

Bottom line - Hamas chose to end the cease fire.  They chose to violate the terms of the agreement.  And any comments coming from "Gaza authorities" is a comment coming from Hamas.  So stop pretending first party comments are third party comments.  Anything coming from Gaza is Hamas propaganda and should be treated as such.

“We are continuing exactly where we left off,” Gallant insisted, calling the last two days of resumed fighting “very impressive” for the IDF.

“Thousands of terrorists have been eliminated, dozens of headquarters [have been struck], hundreds of terabytes of information are in our hands, hundreds of terrorists have been captured and are being interrogated in Israel,” he boasted.

Israeli soldiers given card deck identifying senior Hamas targets: report

Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip are supposedly being handed decks of cards with the faces and information about senior Hamas targets so they know to kill them, Ynet News alleged.

The military has apparently distributed about 10,000 decks of cards over the past few days, as the IDF resumed its ground operations in Gaza following the end of the cease-fire, the outlet explained.

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and military chief Mohammed Deif are included on the cards of desirable targets, according to a photo purporting to show the decks.

The US military used a similar tactic in Iraq in 2003, when it distributed decks of the most wanted figures from Saddam Hussein’s regime, YNet News noted.

Sinwar has also been symbolically demoted on the card because he is not an ace – which might be an attempt to psychologically intimidate him, the outlet explained.

The two aces in the deck appear to be Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashal – the current and former head of Hamas’ political arm – and Marwan Issa, who represents the military wing in the political group, YNet said.

Sinwar’s brother, Muhammad, is the Black Jack, while Deif is the Joker.

The deck also includes 10 cards depicting senior figures who have already been killed.

“We remained very firm in negotiations,” Netanyahu said of Israel’s talks with Hamas in Qatar, which dissolved late this week when the two sides could not agree over the order of hostage releases.

[Hamas is] a devil, a Satan,” he continued, pledging that Israeli forces would “do everything to obliterate” the terror group.

“Our troops have been preparing during this cease-fire for absolute victory over Hamas,” Netanyahu said of the week-long cease-fire that saw the release of 110 hostages from the Gaza Strip.

He also confirmed the restart of the IDF’s ground assault on Gaza, where efforts were now turning toward the densely populated southern part of the region.

“Today I ordered the army to resume attacks in intensified way,” the prime minister told the press, adding that they are prepared to "fight to the end."

The rest of the hostages cannot be freed without the ongoing military operation, he insisted.

“This is a war against the terrorists and for our people. We are all uniting behind our cause and we are all supporting our forces…With the help of God, we will all win,” Netanyahu said.

The prime minister, 74, also took questions from reporters, including some about the potential future for the Gaza Strip post-conflict.

Thousands of people filled Tel Aviv’s “Hostage Square” Saturday evening for a weekly vigil calling for the release of the hostages in the Gaza Strip, Haaretz reported.

Many of the attendees this week wore orange t-shirts in honor of Ariel and Kfir Bibas – two flame-haired brothers nicknamed “the Reds,” who are still believed to be held hostage alongside their mother, Shiri Bibas.

Shiri’s husband, the boys’ father, is also being held by Hamas.

Earlier this week, Hamas alleged that Shiri and her sons had been killed, but Israel countered that it could not confirm this information.

He brushed off concerns about the policy following the shooting of an innocent Israeli man in Jerusalem on Friday, saying that “the moment you distribute firearms in larger numbers, these incidents can happen.”

"We know that in waves of terror in the last decade, the presence of armed civilians saved the situation and prevented a major disaster. It happened dozens of times. Therefore, I think that in the current situation, we should continue with this policy - I definitely support it. There may be costs to it, and those are lives,” Netanyahu insisted.

Ben-Gvir is a controversial figure in Israeli politics: A far-right extremist, his Otzma Yehudit party openly espouses anti-Arabism. The UK will fly surveillance aircraft over Israel and Gaza to help locate hostages

The British Ministry of Defense announced that it will conduct surveillance flights over the Eastern Mediterranean, including operating in air space over Israel and Gaza in an effort to locate and rescue hostages held in Gaza, including British nationals.

The announcement stated that the aircraft will be unarmed, do not have a combat role, and will be tasked solely to locate hostages," and that it will share "only information relating to hostage rescue" will be shared with other entities.

U.S. Defense Secretary: 'You can only win in urban warfare by protecting civilians'

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke about the ongoing fighting between Israel and Hamas and said that "you can only win in urban warfare by protecting civilians."

Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum, Austin said he has "repeatedly made clear to Israel's leaders that protecting Palestinian civilians in Gaza is both a moral responsibility and a strategic imperative."

"I have personally pushed Israeli leaders to avoid civilian casualties, and to shun irresponsible rhetoric," he said, adding that he also urged them to "prevent violence by settlers in the West Bank, and to dramatically expand access to humanitarian aid."

Emphasizing the central role of protecting civilian population, the Defense Secretary said: "If you drive them into the arms of the enemy, you replace a tactical victory with a strategic defeat."
