What changed?
A number of factors seem to have caused a delay, but sources have told The Jerusalem Post that one factor has been a growing concern that Hezbollah is waiting for the moment that most IDF ground forces are committed to Gaza to open a full front with the IDF in the north.

In this narrative, the fact that Hezbollah did not engage at the start of the war Saturday morning and has kept its attacks on Israel at a fairly low threshold does not prove that it is deterred but is part of an elaborate fake-out to lure the IDF into a false sense of security, similar to what Hamas pulled off in the south.

As fodder for such suspicions, sources would note that Israeli intelligence and the political echelon must have a new level of humility about their assessments of enemy intentions after missing the boat regarding Hamas in the south.

This will not stop the IDF from invading Gaza, but it may have caused a delay to better double-check signs regarding Hezbollah's intentions as well as to further reinforce the northern forces in case the worst comes to pass.

There is also a deepening recognition in the IDF and at the political level, that the IDF has not done anything like this in decades, and that rushing in unprepared, simply to more quickly satisfy the wider population's thirst for retribution, could be a large mistake.

In this perspective, the 2006 Second Lebanon War ground invasion was a complete mess, with the airpower being the successful part, with both the 2008-9 and 2014 invasions of Gaza being more symbolic.

In other words, with all of the many "rounds" of conflict, the IDF should not be overconfident about its talent at conducting large land invasion operations.


Strategy against Hamas
While achieving strategic "surprise" would be impossible given that Hamas started this war, the IDF would also like to achieve at least a tactical surprise against Hamas, which requires planning.

A number of other delaying factors could be US pressure to avoid civilian casualties, domestic concerns about Israeli hostages in Gaza, and giving more time for Palestinians to evacuate.

Another factor is the US and world response to date.

Currently, Israel feels huge support and like it has more time to work with to deal with Hamas.

One question that arises at this point though is whether top IDF and civilian leaders are misjudging the clock.

According to Hamas' numbers, already a couple thousand Palestinians are dead and many more wounded. In 2014, when 2,000 Palestinians were killed, at least half were civilians despite the IDF's attempts to avoid civilian casualties.

Such is the fog of war.

The second that those numbers balloon, which will likely be when the invasion starts in a real way, there will be powerful US and world pressure to stop.

Also, the Post has confirmed from many sources that no one has yet decided what will happen to Gaza after the IDF will supposedly topple Hamas' rule.

This and all of the other above factors have left top Israeli officials huffing and puffing for new superlatives for what they will do to Hamas...while still basically having done very little new for about a week.

Only after the war will we know whether this extra time was spent wisely crafting a smarter and more effective invasion and post-invasion plan, or whether the delay will be looked back on as having wasted precious days to "change the reality in Gaza" and avoid future near term Hamas attacks.

I said it on another thread, but it is worthy of being repeated and embraced.

Admiral Bull Halsey in 1943 said the following in San Francisco:

I believe it is a literal quote, but I watched the video of him saying these exact words many years ago.

Point is, his words were appropriate then, they are appropriate today in regard to the Palestinians in Gaza.

Netanyahu betrays Israel if he fails the complete annihilation of Gaza.  The Russians left East Berlin in ruins as a reminder I believe of what not to do ever again.  I stood on a platform in 1970, and gazed at the ruins somewhat surprised.  Best thing Netanyahu can do is completely level Gaza, and tell all involved to find another piece of ground to live upon, because Gaza has just been deemed UNLIVABLE.  Any person found in Gaza in the future will be shot/bombed on site.  It is permanently restricted from habitation.

Israel Delay in Ground Invasion of Gaza Prompts Speculation

Israel appears to have delayed a ground invasion of Gaza that was expected as early as Friday, and speculation is mounting as to why.

Last Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a warning to civilians in northern Gaza to evacuate south, giving them 24 hours to do so (though a spokesman later said that the IDF understood that the evacuation might take several days). But since then, while massing troops on the border, the IDF has not invaded Gaza, except in sporadic attacks to conduct reconnaissance.

One reason is Lebanon. Iran’s proxy terrorist army, Hezbollah, has been firing anti-tank missiles at Israeli posts on the border sporadically, and commandos have been trying to breach the Israeli border at various points. Israel has maintained a policy of firing back, but only at the positions from which they were attacked, not at broader Hezbollah targets. If Hezbollah were to go to war, as Iran has threatened, Israel would be fighting a war on two fronts. So it has been taking time to prepare for that outcome.

Another reason is international concern for humanitarian conditions in Gaza. In previous conflicts, Israel’s most formidable enemy has been global public opinion, which has infinite patience for Israeli civilian casualties but none at all for Palestinian civilian casualties. Though Israel is committed to destroying Hamas regardless of criticism from the outside world, it also needs to preserve its fragile relations with its new Arab allies, as well as the goodwill of friends in the West, especially the United States.

That leads to the next possible reason: fear that a rapid, intense invasion might alienate the Biden administration. Though President Joe Biden has been very supportive since the Oct 7. terror attacks, his administration’s policy toward Israel was decidedly cool for two-and-a-half years. There is speculation — which the U.S. has denied — that Israel will hold off on a big ground invasion until Biden’s expected visit on Wednesday, Oct. 18, is over and the president is again safely out of the way.

Israel’s hunt for Hamas terror group leader Yahya Sinwar: 'Dead man walking'

A clear objective of Israel’s war in Gaza right now is hunting down and assassinating Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

Referred to by Israel as the Butcher of Khan Younis for his violent and cruel torture methods against his enemies, both Israeli and Palestinian, Sinwar, 60, is widely seen as being behind the massacre of Israeli civilians carried out by thousands of Hamas militants on Oct. 7.

The attack, in which 1,400 people are now known to have been killed, with a further 200 missing and likely being held hostage inside the Gaza Strip, is the worst against Jews since the Holocaust. Civilian men, women and children were not only murdered but, according to multiple eyewitness reports also brutalized, raped and even decapitated.

"That man is in our sights," Israeli Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Richard Hecht told journalists over the weekend. "Sinwar is the leader of Hamas in Gaza and he’s a dead man walking."

"We will get to him, however long it takes… and this war could be long," he said.

Sinwar is believed to be somewhere in the Palestinian enclave but hidden deep underground in the warren of tunnels Hamas uses to transport weapons and fighters and where they may even be keeping the hostages. He was born in the Khan Younis refugee camp when the area was part of Egypt.

Hamas will 'protect' hostages, release them 'when circumstances on the ground allow,' it says

Hamas is reportedly claiming that it will "protect" its hostages taken during the war with Israel and will only release them "when circumstances on the ground allow."

Hamas has "a group of detainees of different nationalities, these are our guests and we seek to protect them," according to Abu Obeida, whom Reuters says is the spokesman of the Palestinian terrorist group’s armed wing.

"We will release detainees of different nationalities when circumstances on the ground allow," he added, without elaborating.

The comments surfaced Monday in a video message from Israel says Hamas is holding 199 Israelis hostage, while 13 Americans remain unaccounted for.

(This number may rise or fall as Hamas continues to release videos of the hostages and Israel continues identifying bodies, some of which have been charred beyond recognition, by using DNA samples from family members.) As of this time, there are 20 Americans missing and bodies are being tested.

Biden spoke with some family members on a Zoom call. “It’s my personal commitment to do everything possible, everything possible to return every missing American to their families,” he said,  “we’re working around the clock to secure the release of Americans held by Hamas.”

But the Biden administration has currently ruled out sending rescue forces, instead it is using Hamas allies, Qatar and Turkey, to conduct negotiations with the Islamic terrorist organization.

While Israel has refused to trade hostages for terrorists, Biden may be more willing to do so.

Senior Hamas leader Ali Baraka told Russia’s RT propaganda network, “There are also prisoners in the U.S. We want them. Of course. There are Hamas members sentenced for life in the U.S. We want them too. Of course. We demand that the U.S. free our sons from prisons. The U.S. conducts prisoner swaps. Only recently, it did one with Iran. Why wouldn’t it conduct a prisoner swap with us?”

Very complicated operation that has to consider the location of the hostages, chances of rescue, civilians, etc..  They surely have contingency plans and orders drawn up, but they'll need to be massively modified before going in.  It's a very urbanized environment, and that is the most difficult type of operation to conduct.

Israel hedges on plans for ground invasion of Gaza Strip

The Israel Defense Forces appears to be hedging its plans for a retaliatory offensive of the Gaza Strip – with supposed plans for a massive ground invasion remaining unconfirmed.

"We are preparing for the next stages of war. We haven't said what they will be. Everybody's talking about the ground offensive. It might be something different," Lt Colonel Richard Hecht told a regular briefing with reporters, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Rumors about the IDF”s plans started flying last week, in the wake of Hamas’ deadly surprise attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7.
