The invasion was initially planned for the weekend, but was delayed by a few days at least in part because of cloudy conditions that would have made it harder for Israeli pilots and drone operators to provide ground forces with air cover, the officers said.


In addition to infantry, the Israeli strike force will include tanks, sappers and commandos, the officers added. The ground troops will be given cover by war planes, helicopter gunships, aerial drones and artillery fired from land and sea.

Israel will start "significant military operations" in Gaza only once they see that civilians have left, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson told CNN.

"The important thing here to focus on is that we will commence significant military operations only once we see that civilians have left the area," Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said.

"It's really important that people in Gaza know we've been very, very generous with the time. We have given ample warning, more than 25 hours... I cannot stress more than enough to say now is the time for Gazans to leave.

"Take your belongings, go south. Preserve your life, and do not fall into the trap that Hamas is setting up for you."
More than half of Gaza’s 2 million residents live in the northern section that Israel has told to evacuate. Many families, some of whom were already internally displaced, are now crammed into an even smaller portion of the 140-square-mile territory.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been fleeing south through the battered streets of Gaza after the Israeli military told them to leave northern areas of the densely populated strip.

Entering urban areas in Gaza, however, would bring a new element to the fight.

Hamas has shown a level of military capability far beyond what was previously thought, and is probably well-prepared for the next phase of the war, Wedeman's analysis notes.

Israeli forces will also have to be mindful dozens of Hamas hostages – both soldiers and civilians, including women and children – are being held in the crowded enclave. Hundreds of thousands of people in northern Gaza are fleeing in buses, cars and on foot, crowding onto narrow roads leading south after Israel’s evacuation warning. The Israeli military said it is preparing a “wide range” of offensive plans “for the next stages of the war, with an emphasis on significant ground operations,” though it has not provided a concrete indication of when the assault would start.

A U.S. evacuation deal to allow American citizens to leave Gaza via the Rafah border into Egypt during a small window on Saturday faltered after Palestinian and Egyptian officials failed to communicate, The Washington Post reported.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is “fast becoming untenable,” U.N. relief head Martin Griffiths warned Saturday, adding that “the worst is yet to come.”

Here’s what to know:

*The Hamas attack killed at least 1,300 people in Israel and injured about 3,300, authorities said. Palestinian officials said 2,215 people in Gaza have been killed and more than 8,700 wounded in Israeli strikes.

*Israeli national security adviser Tzahi Hanegbi — the first government official to give a news briefing since the war began — said he “clearly made a mistake” in assessing before the war that “Hamas is deterred.”

*The United States is working with the governments of Israel, Egypt and Jordan, as well as with the United Nations, “to surge support to ease the humanitarian consequences of Hamas’s attack, create conditions needed to resume the flow of assistance, and advocate for the upholding of the law of war,” President Biden said Saturday.

*The World Health Organization said Israel’s directive to evacuate hospitals in northern Gaza was a “death sentence for the sick and injured,” and called on the country to reverse it. It would be wonderful if that could be done.
But chances are most of the hostages are dead by now.
At least denying Hamas the tunnels would mean they can't use them to get in the Israeli rear and put the entire effort in disarray. It would make it far more difficult for Hamas to do pop-up attacks, too.
The alternative is to invade the tunnel system as well, where the home turf advantage is considerable, and if the Israelis get close to cornering Hamas there, the hostages will likely be executed anyway.

I suppose there is always that longshot chance they would try to bargain with them for their own lives, but these aren't normal people anyway, and a lifetime of imprisonment might pale compared to 72 virgins.

Award-winning journalist Amir Tibon was at home in Nahal Oz, a kibbutz bordering Gaza, when Hamas attacked communities along the border on October 7.

As the sounds of gunfire came closer to the safe room Amir's family was sheltering, he rang his father, Noam Tibon, a 62-year-old retired major-general living in Tel Aviv.

On hearing the news, the grandfather, who spent his military career specializing in counter-terrorism, replied to his son: "Trust me, I will come.'" He knew that I would come. This is my profession, nobody can stop me," Noam told NBC Nightly News.

Fmr IDF special operator suggests delay in ground invasion due to new hostage intel

Former Israeli special operator Aaron Cohen says the delay of Israel's ground invasion may be due to new intelligence regarding the state of hostages taken by Hamas in Gaza.

Cohen appeared on Fox News on Sunday to offer analysis of the situation. Israel had previously said it delayed its invasion plans this weekend due to poor weather that threatened to obstruct the air force's ability to support ground troops, though Cohen suggested that may not be the full story.

"What we need is what Israel does best. They come together, they're creative. They've got the intestinal fortitude. They've got the experience, and right now thousands of phone calls are being listened to. You're about to see Israel [do] what it does best: rescue good people. So stand by," Cohen said.

Cohen went on to say that buying time to save hostages is a top priority for Israeli forces, and a phony delay of the invasion may have offered extra time.

Iran threatens intervention if Israeli operations in Gaza escalate, warns of ‘huge earthquake’

Flexing influence throughout the region, an Iranian official threatened Israel with a “huge earthquake” if their “war criminals” didn’t back down on Gaza.

While Hamas had called for a global jihad on Friday, setting populations around the world on high alert, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian had mobilized himself and met with leaders in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Speaking with reporters in the latter’s capital Beirut Saturday, the foreign official warned that Hezbollah could escalate the war if Israel didn’t back down.

“I know about the scenarios that Hezbollah has put in place. Any step the resistance (Hezbollah) will take will cause a huge earthquake in the Zionist entity,” Amirabdollahian expressed.

The message came after he had met with a top Hamas official, Saleh Arouri, and the leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, Ziad Nakhaleh, according to Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV. The Iranian foreign minister added, “I want to warn the war criminals and those who support this entity before it’s too late to stop the crimes against civilians in Gaza, because it might be too late in a few hours.”

    AMBASSADOR MICHAEL HERZOG: The U.S. administration has supported Israel’s right to strike back at Hamas after the massacre and waging war against the state of Israel. At the same time, we understand the concerns from the U.S. We are doing everything possible so that civilians will not be hurt. They’re in a war zone and have become human shields. Hamas has made them into human shields. We are calling on them to leave the northern part of Gaza so they will not be hurt. Hamas is trying to force them to stay so they can use them as human shields.

    We are in the process of preparing what we call safe zones in the southern part of Gaza for all of those who evacuated their homes. We are working very closely with the United Nations to create these safe zones. When they are in the safe zone, we will make sure they get all the vital supplies they need like water, food and medical support.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken calls for protection for civilians in both the Gaza Strip and Israel as the Israeli military ordered half of the Palestinian territory’s population to evacuate in advance of an expected ground assault.

Blinken met his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, in Riyadh as he began a third day of intense Middle East diplomacy aimed at preventing the Israel-Hamas war from expanding into a regional conflict and fueling a humanitarian crisis.

Both stress the importance of minimizing the harm to civilians as Israel prepared for an anticipated incursion against Hamas a week after the militant group’s unprecedented assault on Israel.

“As Israel pursues its legitimate right, to defending its people and to trying to ensure that this never happens again, it is vitally important that all of us look out for civilians, and we’re working together to do exactly that,” Blinken says before heading to the United Arab Emirates for similar discussions.

“None of us want to see suffering by civilians on any side, whether it’s in Israel, whether it’s in Gaza, whether it’s anywhere else,” he says.
