 UAW to expand strike; leader invites Biden to picket with workers

The United Auto Workers (UAW) will expand its strike Friday afternoon, with employees walking off the job at General Motors and Stellantis parts distribution facilities, union President Shawn Fain announced.

Fain, in livestreamed remarks, said workers have made progress in negotiations with Ford since a targeted strike began at the Big Three auto companies last week.

“At GM and Stellantis, it’s a different story,” Fain said.

The union is expanding the strike Friday to include Stellantis and GM facilities at 38 locations across 28 states, he said.

“We will shut down parts distribution until those two companies come to their senses and come to the table with a serious offer,” Fain said.

The expanded strike could threaten economic gains and poses a growing problem for President Biden, who is staunchly pro-union but has backed policies to incentivize the use of electric vehicles, which is a factor in the strike.

President Biden announced that he will “join the picket line” with members of the United Auto Workers union next week in solidarity with their demands for higher pay and a shorter work week from Detroit’s “Big Three” automakers.

“Tuesday, I’ll go to Michigan to join the picket line and stand in solidarity with the men and women of UAW as they fight for a fair share of the value they helped create,” Biden, 80, tweeted on Friday.

“It’s time for a win-win agreement that keeps American auto manufacturing thriving with well-paid UAW jobs.”

The president’s announcement comes after UAW President Shawn Fain extended an invitation to the commander in chief to join striking workers on the picket line.

“We invite and encourage everyone who supports our case to join us on the picket line, from our friends and families all the way up to the president of the United States. We invite you to join us in our fight,” Fain said in livestreamed remarks Friday.

The union, which has withheld its endorsement of Biden over concerns about his support for electric vehicles, also revealed that it’s expanding its strike Friday to include 38 Stellantis and General Motors facilities in 38 locations and 28 states.

People are goofing on AOC, but I totally get the connection between EVs and the vaccine.

Like the vaccine, if you don't stop for a boost with alarming regularity, they're completely useless.

They also require ignoring larger truths - like where the electricity comes from, how the batteries being made, etc. - to keep the illusion of benefit going.

If they discover that EVs also increase your risk of myocarditis, she'll have hit the trifecta.

President Joe Biden plans to travel to Michigan on Tuesday, where he will speak in support of striking autoworkers and become the first American president to walk a picket line.

It's too soon to tell whether Biden's support will have much of an effect on the impasse between the so-called Big Three automakers (Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, the international conglomerate that owns the remnants of Chrysler) and the United Auto Workers (UAW), the union that called the strike earlier this month. Politically, however, the White House is framing the event as the ultimate show of solidarity from the pro-union president.

You might also think about it as something else: Joe Biden's stand for the 1 percent.

That's roughly the percentage of the American workforce that is unionized and employed in manufacturing. Far from being a broad-based signal of support for blue-collar Americans, Biden's advocacy on behalf of the UAW this week will be performative shilling for a mere sliver of the country's workers. ...
