Military: Russians strengthened assault groups in Vovchansk

UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Sep 17 — Over the past day, the Russian army conducted logistics in Vovchansk in the Kharkiv direction, evacuated losses, and strengthened assault groups, reported the “Kharkiv” group of forces. 

Russia started its new offensive north and northeast in the Kharkiv region in May, but Ukrainian troops have stabilized the frontline in this section since. Now, heavy battles are ongoing in and around Vovchansk (three miles from the border, 46 miles away from Kharkiv) and near Lyptsi (six miles from the border, 12 miles from Kharkiv.)

The “Kharkiv” reported that near Hlyboke, the Russians are relocating personnel to strengthen their frontline positions.

Near Lukiantsi, the Russians are setting up a communication system and logistics and preparing for assaults, “Kharkiv” wrote.

Near Tykhe, Russians are conducting aerial reconnaissance to detect units of the Defense Forces.

Over the past day, Russia conducted 26 kamikaze drone strikes in the Kharkiv direction, one airstrike using a glide bomb (KAB), and fired 321 times at Ukrainian positions.

According to “Kharkiv,” the Russian army lost 62 troops over the past day in the Kharkiv direction.

In the Kharkiv direction, the Russians also lost 59 pieces of weapons and military equipment over the past day  .  .  .

Indian manufacturers of artillery shells have been redirecting sales to European buyers for shipment to Ukraine. New Delhi has not intervened to stop the trade despite protests from Moscow, as reported by Reuters.

The transfer of munitions to support Ukraine's defense against Russia has been occurring for over a year, according to sources and customs data. Three Indian officials stated that the Kremlin has raised this issue at least twice, including during a July meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Indian counterpart.

According to Reuters citing two sources in the Indian government and two in the defense industry, New Delhi has supplied a very small amount of munitions used by Ukraine, with one official estimating it to be less than 1% of the total arms imported by Kyiv since the war began.

According to a Spanish official and a senior Indian official, as well as a former top manager at Yantra India, a state company whose munitions are used by Ukraine, among the European countries sending Indian munitions are Italy and the Czech Republic, which is leading an initiative to supply artillery shells to Kyiv from outside the European Union.  .  .  .

Putin is facing a no-win quagmire. If he quits and loses, Russia is doomed. If he continues the war without a complete victory, Russia will not be able to sustain the effort. Putin is caught in a draining whirlpool of his own making and is currently simply riding around the edges of it trying to find any escape.

Even if Putin wins, he has damaged/obliterated so much of Ukraine, he will be the ruler of a wasteland which will take several decades, billions upon billions of dollars, and an incredible amount of manpower to rebuild. Crimea is an example. Russia may claim to 'control' Crimea, but Russia is in no position to put Crimea to any use. Putin does not have the money, the resources, or the people necessary to be able to recreate the thriving economy which he sought to conquer and exploit. 

All of this does not bode well for the world. With Putin wounded, albeit self inflicted, and trapped in a situation which has no good choices, then there is no real restraint for him, as an old sociopath in ill health, to stop him from unleashing nuclear weapons on the world.

Putin is quoted as saying, 'There is no world without Russia.' He may have meant this more literally than most people assumed.

Let us all pray that it does not come to that.

Playing with nukes will most assuredly get Russia obliterated - literally.  Most of the Russian nukes will most likely not fire or, if launched, not detonate (they'll squib), but the few that do not get shot down and that detonate will (a) not leave much of a lasting scar anywheres - anyone visited Hiroshima or Nagasaki within the past 30 years - but will definitely result in Russia being nuked to a fair-thee-well.  I doubt if even Putin is stupid enough to go down that path, notwithstanding how many of his American supporters think he is.

I agree. The Russians made some big noise about using their dreaded hypersonic missiles against us if we didn't let them have Ukraine and what happened? Nothing. They didn't have that many such missiles and they squandered them destroying hospitals and apartment buildings.

To be honest, if the Russians had functional nuclear weapons then I expect they would have used one or two by now.

Makes me wonder if they have any at all.

Volunteers dying as Russia’s war dead tops 70,000

More than 70,000 people fighting in Russia’s military have now died in Ukraine, according to data analysed by the BBC.

And for the first time, volunteers - civilians who joined the armed forces after the start of the war - now make up the highest number of people killed on the battlefield since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Every day, the names of those killed in Ukraine, their obituaries and photographs from their funerals are published across Russia in the media and on social networks.

BBC Russian and the independent website Mediazona have collated these names, along with names from other open sources, including official reports.

We checked that the information had been shared by authorities or relatives of the deceased - and that they had been identified as dying in the war.

New graves in cemeteries have also helped provide the names of soldiers killed in Ukraine - these are usually marked by flags and wreaths sent by the defence ministry.

We have identified the names of 70,112 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine, but the actual number is believed to be considerably higher. Some families do not share details of their relatives’ deaths publicly - and our analysis does not include names we were unable to check, or the deaths of militia in Russian-occupied Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine............
