Sons of elites safe while ordinary Russians face frontlines

George Allison - September 14, 2024

A stark division is growing within Russia’s military ranks, where ordinary soldiers face the deadly frontlines, while the privileged few secure safer postings.
This glaring disparity has led to growing discontent, including among elite military units, who are increasingly feeling abandoned by their leadership in the protracted war in Ukraine.

Recent intelligence reports from the UK Ministry of Defence have shed light on the formation of a specialised military unit, “Bars Kaskad.”

This unit recruits personnel from affluent, influential Russian families and places them in operations far from the frontlines, in contrast to the grim conditions faced by everyday Russian soldiers.

Tensions escalated further when soldiers from Russia’s prestigious 155th Naval Infantry Brigade went public with their grievances, accusing their commanders of treating them as mere “cannon fodder” in Ukraine. Their open letter, which was widely circulated on the social media platform Telegram, underscored the heavy losses the unit had suffered during a disastrous offensive near Donetsk.

The letter explicitly stated, “Due to the ‘carefully’ planned offensive by the ‘great commanders’, we lost about 300 people and 50 percent of our vehicles.” The blunt criticism of the leadership spread quickly across Russia  .  .  .

Ukraine's Azov Brigade Denies Links to Trump Assassination Suspect Ryan Routh

Amira Barkhush  |  Sep 16, 2024  |  14:15

The Ukrainian Azov Brigade refuted any connection to Ryan Wesley Routh, suspected of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump.

The statement came out after a 2022 video from a rally in support of the Mariupol garrison in Kyiv, featuring Ryan Wesley Routh, the suspect in the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, started circulating on social media.

“We would like to officially state that Ryan Wesley Routh has no connection to Azov and has never had any connection to Azov. The peaceful demonstration he attended was open and anyone could join it. He was caught on the video filmed by the protesters by accident,” a statement on Azov’s official account reads. “We believe that the spread of the narrative about the possible connection between Azov and Ryan Wesley Routh is playing along with Russian propaganda and discredits the 12th Special Forces Brigade Azov of the National Guard of Ukraine and the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine in general.“  .  .

Failed roofer goes to Ukraine, and buys a house in Hawaii.

Have you ever priced homes over there?  You can't buy a shed on a postage stamp lot for under $1M.

So you are correlating the shooter and Obama's finances, and ability for income?

Obama getting a house there.....  Plausible.    Routh?  ....  No so much.

Why can't Routh buy a place in Hawaii? He made a down payment, got a loan, and has a house. He also had the means to travel quite a bit.

Do I think he's a Dem tool? Heck yeah. But some of what he did plenty of other people also do.

In a 2004 visit to Maui, we gave (minimal) thought to real estate there.  Even then, an 600 ft2 shack went for over $1M.  I call bull shit that he has the means to buy and maintain a place that is likely between $2-3M.  And do world travel too?  Who's funding this guy.

I'm more interested in who was handling him. He may have been self funded but also susceptible to extremism and the nize people from the three letter agency in his Crazy Club gave him a nudge.

The U.S. Is Playing Nuclear Chicken in Ukraine

Ukraine has been lobbying hard for the lifting of all restrictions on weapons use. During the recent visit, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov identified a number of Russian airfields within range of U.S.- and European-provided long-range weapons, and Kiev is now seeking the green light to take the conflict to the next level. Zelensky himself will travel to Washington this month to present Biden with a “victory plan” that will reportedly outline Kiev’s path to achieving its war aims. Such a plan will undoubtedly include the acquisition and use of more long-range weaponry with offensive capabilities for striking Russia proper.

As of right now, it hasn’t happened. The likely reason is that even our otherwise myopic policy makers understand that Kiev’s dire situation on the battlefield leaves it with one strategic option: getting the United States more involved. Moscow has subsequently been signaling that the threshold between proxy war and open engagement has been reached. Whether this threshold will be crossed is dependent on the decisions arrived at in the halls of Washington (and perhaps Brussels) over the next several weeks.

The present peril has been significantly exacerbated in the past several weeks by reported changes to the respective nuclear strategies of both Russia and the United States.

As Ukraine has lobbied for further long-range capacities, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took the occasion to further chide the West for “playing with fire.” The United States was “asking for trouble" by allowing for strikes on Russian territory, he stated, and it would be irresponsible of those “entrusted with nuclear weapons” to engage in such reckless brinkmanship.

Russian media also reported, following Lavrov’s announcement, that the Kremlin had now decided to “refine” the country’s nuclear doctrine in light of such provocative and escalatory behavior. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov confirmed the ongoing changes as well, citing Russia’s “Western adversaries’ escalation course in regards to the special military operation.”.........

Russia can't defeat and conquer Ukraine so they're having a tantrum and making empty threats at the world's most powerful military alliance.

Granted, NATO isn't what it used to be but it's still more than enough to curbstomp the (edited) Russians.  22222frying pan

So when Trump gets in office and drives the price of oil back to $30/bbl, will Russia again "refine" their nuclear doctrine in light of such provocative behavior?  At some point, you have to stand up to bullies.  Seriously, are we going to let Russia dictate our foreign policy?

I was born during the Cold War ... every day was nuclear chicken.

Considering the massive failures that Russia has incurred with its conventional forces, I suspect they would attempt launching nuclear ICBMs after thirty years of neglect, only to see them fail before reaching their targets.  And if they can't even protect their refineries and fuel storage facilities from slow moving drones, then how will they protect their cities from a full-scale US nuclear response?  Russia is bluffing.  The entire world knows Russia is bluffing.  Except for the Biden regime who is now acting all chicken shit over Putin's hollow threats.

"We almost shot you. We thought you were Ukrainians".

Three Russian soldiers met fighters near their positions who introduced themselves as an "airborne reconnaissance team".

But to the surprise of the Russians, the strangers were not who they said they were.

The Azov fighters carried out a complex operation and "invited" the unsuspecting Russian soldiers to surrender.

The camera of a fighter of the 12th Special Forces Brigade Azov recorded the entire conversation with the Russians. The latter commented on this story in captivity, where they are guaranteed safety of life and health.

06:06-09:14 "You have fallen into the hands of a pure-blooded Ukrainian"

Ukraine in talks to buy 12 Viper helicopters

Dylan Malyasov  |  Sep 15, 2024

Ukraine is in “active” negotiations with the U.S. to acquire 12 Bell AH-1Z Viper combat helicopters, originally produced for Pakistan and later offered to Slovakia, according to a report by Defense News.

The discussions come as Ukraine seeks to bolster its frontline capabilities amid ongoing combat operations in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and other regions.

A senior industry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that Slovakia had initially pursued a discounted deal for the helicopters. However, Bratislava has since shifted its focus toward other potential defense purchases, including F-16 fighter jets and air defense systems. This move has reportedly caused some frustration among U.S. officials, according to the source familiar with the talks.

Vadym Ivchenko, a member of Ukraine’s parliament from the Batkivshchyna party, told Defense News that Ukraine has been interested in acquiring the Viper helicopters since 2022. “These helicopters are crucial for our soldiers fighting on the front lines in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and conducting operations in the Kursk region,” Ivchenko said.

The AH-1Z Viper helicopters were initially ordered by Pakistan under two U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreements in 2015 and 2016, making Pakistan the first foreign customer for this advanced helicopter. The 12 helicopters were produced between mid-2017 and mid-2018 at Bell’s manufacturing facility in Amarillo, Texas. However, following the U.S. government’s decision in January 2018 to halt military aid to Pakistan due to political reasons  .  .  .

Ukraine May Have A New Strategy In Russia’s Kursk Oblast—Move Fast And Surround Thousands Of Russian Troops

David Axe  |  Sep 16, 2024 - 04:53pm EDT  |  Updated 06:34pm EDT

It shocked many observers—apparently including many Russians—when, on Thursday, Ukrainian sappers riding in an ex-Soviet IMR-2 engineering vehicle breached Russian defenses along the Russia-Ukraine border just south of the Russian village of Novyi Put.

The village is 20 miles west of the main Ukrainian salient in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. Six weeks ago, a powerful Ukrainian force—around a dozen battalions from eight or so experienced brigades—invaded Kursk and quickly gained control of 400 square miles of Russian soil.

If it was unclear last week why the Ukrainians would also invade around Novyi Put, it’s a bit clearer now. Backed by tanks and covered by Ukrainian air force warplanes lobbing building-demolishing glide bombs, a Ukrainian tactical group apparently anchored by the 95th Air Assault Brigade is slicing right as it advances past Novyi Put and through the southern blocks of the nearest Russian town, Vesoloe.

That is to say, the Ukrainian troops are turning toward the main Kursk salient. If the Ukrainians attacking northeast from Novyi Put can connect with the Ukrainians in the main salient, they’ll cut off potentially thousands of Russians between them and the border.

But it’s possible the Ukrainians don’t have enough well-equipped forces to complete the maneuver.

The Ukrainian Khorne Group, a team of drone operators supporting the Novyi Put attack, hinted at the encirclement objective at the start of the assault past Novyi Put. “We've advanced into new areas  .  .  .
