The Upper House passed Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act, Thursday afternoon by a vote of 52-16. One Senator abstained.

The controversial legislation gives Ottawa the authority to tell broadcasters like YouTube and Netflix what they should and should not recommend to viewers online.

On March 30, the bill passed the House of Commons, but earned incredible pushback from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre citing no debate on it earlier that day due to “time allocation”.

“The Liberals in coalition with the NDP and Bloc Québécois have just passed the censorship bill out of the House of Commons,” said a dejected Poilievre. He remained confident in the “free speech warriors” within the Senate, including Conservative Senator Leo Housakos, who held the bill back for the better part of a year. ...

On February 2, Liberal Senator David Richards likened the ‘censorship’ bill to totalitarian regimes.

“Stalin again will be looking over our shoulder when we write,” he said, drawing additional similarities between this bill and dictatorships.

“In Germany, it was called the Ministry of National Enlightenment,” continued Rochards, as he compared it to the Reich Ministry for Propaganda and Public Enlightenment which controlled film, radio, theatre, and the press during Hitler’s reign in Nazi Germany. ...

The bill passed via a motion with 52 votes for, 16 against, and 1 abstention, with one Conservative senator who voted against the bill saying its passage is a 'sad day' for Canada.

OTTAWA (LifeSiteNews) –– The Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s internet censorship legislation Bill C-11 has now become law after Canadian Senators late this afternoon voted to pass the bill, forgoing all their previously recommended amendments. ...

The now-passed motion, put forth by Senator Marc Gould, explains that “Government Bill C-11 would amend the Broadcasting Act to modify Canada’s broadcasting policy, bring into the act ‘online undertakings’ that transmit content over the internet, and change the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s regulatory powers, among many other things.”

In the Upper Chamber, senators appointed by Trudeau have spent the last few days shutting down further debate on the bill, with the vote today essentially accepting it as is.

One Conservative senator, who voted against the bill, blasted its passage as a “sad day” for Canada.  ...

Under the new law, it will now be up to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to come up with the details on how the bill will be enforced, which critics have said could take years of back-and-forth debate.   ...

In practice, Bill C-11 now mandates that the CRTC be in charge of regulating online content on platforms such as YouTube and Netflix to ensure that such platforms are promoting content in accordance with a variety of CRTC guidelines.  ...

Ireland is about to pass one of the most radical hate speech bills yet. Merely possessing "hateful" material on your devices is enough to face prison time. Not only that, but the burden of proof is shifted to the accused, who is expected to prove they didn't intend to use the material to "spread hate". This clause is so radical that even the Trotskyist People Before Profit opposed it as a flagrant violation of civil liberties. Dark times.
