Johnie Cooks, Giants Super Bowl winner, dead at 64

Johnie Cooks, a linebacker who starred at Mississippi State before going on to a 10-year NFL career, died on Thursday.

He was 64.

“When you think of Mississippi State Football, you think of legends like Johnie Cooks,” Mississippi State head coach Zach Arnett wrote on Twitter. “The Bulldog Family lost an all-time great today. On behalf of our program, we extend our condolences to the Cooks family.”

Don Reinhoudt, former World’s Strongest Man and powerlifting champion, dead at 78

Don Reinhoudt, who won the 1979 World’s Strongest Man competition, died following a car crash in upstate New York earlier this week.

He was 78.

New York State police announced earlier this week that Reinhoudt veered off the shoulder of a road in Pomfret on Monday and struck a tree.

After he was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital, Reinhoudt was pronounced dead.

The fatal wreck remained under investigation as of Wednesday’s announcement.

Former Tennessee Sen Roy Herron killed in jet ski crash: ‘Will be missed by us all’

Former Tennessee lawmaker Roy B. Herron has died after suffering injuries related to a jet ski accident this month. He was 69.

Herron had decades of public service, including terms in the state House of Representatives, Senate and as chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party. He was also a candidate for governor in 2010.

FOX 17 reports that Herron was hospitalized after a jet ski accident on Kentucky Lake on July 1.

Many of Herron’s family members and former colleagues have paid tribute in his honor.....

Andrea Evans, ‘One Life to Live’ and ‘The Young and the Restless’ star, dead at 66

Andrea Evans, the soap opera star who rose to fame in the 1970s as bad girl Tina Lord on ABC’s “One Life To Live,” has died. She was 66.

Evans died Sunday of breast cancer at her Pasadena, California, home, her representatives confirmed to The Post on Monday.

“I’ve been working with Andrea for the past seven years. She was such a tremendous talent and an absolute joy to work with,” her manager, Nick Leicht, told The Post.

The two-time Daytime Emmy-nominated actress went on to play Patti Weaver on CBS’ “The Young and the Restless,” Tawny Moore on “The Bold and the Beautiful” and Rebecca Hotchkiss on NBC’s “Passions.”

Most recently, Evans portrayed Patty Walker in 12 episodes of Amazon Prime’s drama series “The Bay” from 2017 to 2020.

James Lewis, longtime suspect in the 1982 Tylenol murders, dead at 76

James Lewis — the longtime suspect in the cyanide-laced Tylenol poisonings that killed seven people in the Chicago area in 1982 — died in his home Sunday.

Lewis was pronounced dead by medics in his Cambridge, Massachusetts house after they responded to a 911 call of an unresponsive person at about 4 p.m., police said. He was 76.

Police said his death was not suspicious.

Lewis was the prime — and only — suspect in the Tylenol murders that shocked the country and forever changed pharmaceutical packaging.

He was never charged with the killings and the case remains open, but he was convicted of the lesser charge of extortion related to the deadly scheme.

PRAGUE, July 12 (Reuters) - Czech-born writer Milan Kundera, author of the novel "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" who lived nearly five decades in Paris after emigrating in disillusionment from his Communist-ruled homeland, has died at the age of 94.

The Moravian Library (MZK) in the Czech city of Brno, which houses Kundera's personal collection, said he died in his Paris apartment on Tuesday after a long illness.

Kundera won global accolades for the way he depicted themes and characters that floated between the mundane reality of everyday life and the lofty world of ideas.

Joe Campbell, former Raiders defensive end and Super Bowl champ, found dead at 68 after going on hike

Former Raider defensive end Joe Campbell, a member of the 1980 team that won Super Bowl XV, was found dead at 68 after going on a hike Sunday in Florida.

Campbell likely suffered a cardiac incident, his brother Patrick told Delaware Online.

He was a standout at Salesianum School in Delaware, helping the 1972 team win the state title.

“Everybody looked up to him,” longtime friend and former Sallies teammate Dennis Kelly told the outlet. “Everybody loves a winner, and Joe crossed that threshold into being a pro athlete.”

Campbell played college football at Maryland and was an All-American.

Actress, singer and style icon Jane Birkin dead at 76

British actress and singer Jane Birkin, a 1960s and 70s style icon who rose to fame singing in French and was later associated with an eponymous high-end handbag, was found dead at her home in Paris on Sunday at the age of 76.

In sharing the news of her death, the French Culture Ministry said the country had lost a “timeless Francophone icon.”

The singer was known for her musical and romantic relationship with French singer Serge Gainsbourg, with whom she sang the sexually explicit “Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus” (“I Love You… Me Neither”).

Lisa Marie, who died on Jan. 12 at age 54, had been dealing with a number of health problems in the months leading up to her death just as Elvis had, including long-lasting fevers, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting, according to the report.

But she ultimately died of a “sequelae of a small bowel obstruction,” which developed after she underwent bariatric surgery several years ago (Such obstructions are known long-term complications of the weight-loss surgery).

When Lisa Marie was in the emergency room, she, too, suffered heart issues and had to have a temporary pacemaker implanted due to life-threatening heart rhythms, per her autopsy report. Her condition continued to decline until she eventually went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead 20 minutes later.

Nick Benedict, ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘All My Children’ alum, dead at 76

Nick Benedict, a soap opera actor who was on “Days of Our Lives,” “All My Children,” and “The Young and the Restless,” has died.

He was 76 years old.

Barbara Ferrante, the owner of Jakes’s Steakhouse in Tehachapi, California, where Benedict’s wife Ginger works as a bartender, confirmed the news to Fox News Digital.

“Nick Benedict’s birthday was July 14. He went to be with the Lord this day. Please pray for Ginger,” a Facebook post from Jake’s Steakhouse said.

A fundraising page organized before his death said Ginger had taken a leave of absence from the restaurant after he underwent emergency spinal cord surgery and was admitted to hospice.

‘Sixteen Candles’ star Carlin Glynn dead: ‘Best Little Whorehouse’ Tony winner was 83

Carlin Glynn, a Tony Award-winning actress and singer known for her role as Brenda Baker in the 1984 hit “Sixteen Candles” and the Broadway smash “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” died July 13, she was 83.

Glynn died of complications from dementia and cancer, according to Deadline.

Her daughter, director and actress Mary Stuart Masterson, confirmed the news on Instagram.

“She was the most graceful clumsy person you would ever meet,” Masterson wrote in a heartfelt post. “Strong, smart, silly, intuitive, kind, generous, passionate and a deep listener.”

The post continued, “She was devoted to my father and to the enormous circle of students and collaborators who were considered her chosen family.”

Tony Bennett dead at 96 in his hometown of New York: ‘Good Italian stock’

Tony Bennett, the legendary pop, jazz and big-band vocalist, has died after a seven-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 96.

Publicist Sylvia Weiner confirmed Bennett’s death, revealing he passed away in his hometown of New York. His official cause of death — just two weeks shy of his 97th birthday — has not yet been announced.

“I come from good Italian stock — but I’ve tried to stay fit through the years,” Bennett told me nearly 20 years ago.

At the time he was a spry 72, meeting and greeting concertgoers with swagger before a benefit performance in the blazing hot Sonoran Desert of Tucson, Ariz.

For two decades beyond that, the 20-time Grammy winner kept swinging as smoothly as ever — making history as one of the only artists to chart new albums in the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and the first three decades of the 21st century.

Before Tony Bennett had an impressive singing career, he served his country in WWII.

Tony Bennett is an icon of American music alongside the likes of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. Known for traditional pop standards, big band, show tunes and jazz, Bennett earned 20 Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award and two Primetime Emmy Awards. With more than 50 million records sold worldwide, his legacy is well-established. Sadly, on July 21, 2023, Bennett passed away at the age of 96. Beyond his music, Bennett can also be remembered for his service in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Born Anthony Dominick Benedetto, Bennett grew up in New York during the Great Depression. Listening to the music of Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby, he started singing at an early age. Although Bennett attended New York’s School of Industrial Art, he dropped out at the age of 16 to help support his family as a copy boy and runner for the Associated Press. Bennett also worked as a singing waiter and participated in amateur singing nights around the city.

In November 1944, three months after his 18th birthday, Bennett was drafted into the Army. He attended training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and Fort Robertson, Nebraska to serve as a rifleman in the infantry. In January 1945, Bennett was assigned to the 63rd Infantry Division’s 255th Infantry Regiment. The unit suffered heavy casualties during the Battle of the Bulge and Bennett was one of many replacements sent to bulk them back up.
