I know it's intended to be absurd, but it isn't. For the past few decades there has been a great deal of pressure for educators to teach kids in groups instead of individually, and this has resulted in de facto collective bargaining for grades, as each kid has to live with the group's grade.
This is just fine with most of my professor colleagues, but in my classes I steadfastly refuse to give anyone credit for belonging to a group. But I am a dinosaur as far as the system as it stands now is concerned.
