Russia’s Sole Aircraft Carrier Won’t Return to Sea Before 2024... If It Ever Does

Russia’s sole aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, is now slated to return to service post-2024.
Since 2017, the carrier has been undergoing a refit designed to extend its service life by another decade.
A series of unfortunate events—including the sinking of its drydock and a fatal fire— has pushed back the ill-fated ship’s return by at least two years.
One of Russia’s most visible symbols of seapower won’t emerge from refit for at least another two years. Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia’s one and only aircraft carrier, will now re-enter service in 2024 at the earliest, seven years after it went into drydock for much-needed upgrades. Once complete, Kuznetsov should be able to spend another 10-15 years in service.
