There's a generation of us old gals who can't hear the name "Alice Lon" without fondly remembering her namesake petticoats. Dayum, we thought we were so amazing wearing those things. We endured the scratchy for the beauty statement. We are, after all, the generation that slept on brush rollers. 
Which explains a lot. 
I wore petticoats a few times when I was young. I didn't sleep on brush rollers, but had rollers that had little combs that clipped. They weren't all that comfortable either.
Then ... when I hit my teens they came out with steam rollers which saved me from having to sleep with rollers.
