THE ARMY BRIEF ARMY

Welcome to The Army Brief, a weekly look at the news and ideas shaping the service’s future.

Renaming recommendations. African American men and women, a military spouse and her husband, and the first Hispanic American four-star general are among the people whose names are recommended to replace Army bases named in honor of Confederate generals, Defense One reports.

AI and public opinion. Special operators are hoping that artificial intelligence can help them understand public perceptions, Defense One reports. U.S. troops in Mali have had a harder time operating there because of the presence of the Russian Wagner mercenary group and their information operations.

When these bases were named, I imagine there was still a good deal of resentment from the Civil War lingering.  In the wisdom of the time, the military and congress apparently felt one way to reunite the country was to show appreciation for the talents of southern generals and soldiers by naming bases after some.  Now the political party which caused the Civil War wants to take the country back those days and show their contempt of the south; an effort to assuage their part in causing the war.  Now they just want to divide rather than unite the nation so they attack a clear effort at reunification.
