New York passes bill making it illegal for anyone under 21 to buy - or even HAVE - a semiautomatic rifle just weeks after 18-year-old with semi-automatics massacred ten in Buffalo as mass shootings soar across the US

    The New York State legislature voted Thursday to ban anyone under the age of 21 from buying or even possessing a semi-automatic rifle
    The bill would also require anyone buying a semi-automatic rifle to get a license - which is now only required in New York State for handguns
    It is part of a larger package of gun control measures, which also includes restricting civilian purchases of bullet-resistant armor
    Other bills would require new guns to be equipped with microstamping technology that can help law enforcement trace bullets
    The move comes less than three weeks since an 18-year-old used two semi-automatic weapons to shoot up a supermarket in Buffalo
    Ten people were killed as a result

New York's legislature voted on its last day of session Thursday to ban anyone under the age of 21 from buying or even possessing a semi-automatic rifle.

The bill also requires anyone buying a semi-automatic rifle to get a license - which is currently only required in New York State for handguns.

But it is just one part of a larger package of gun control measures announced earlier this week by Democratic legislative leaders and Gov. Kathy Hochul to bolster New York's already strict gun laws in the wake of a mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo.

The State of New York is now obligated to compensate gun owners under 21 for the loss of use of their property, per Amendment V.  Of course Democrats don't believe in the US Constitution.  If they won't observe the Second Amendment, they won't observe the Fifth Amendment either.

New York Democrats passed Gov. Kathy Hochul’s (D) gun control wish list Thursday, including a ban on body armor purchases, a higher age minimum for “semiautomatic rifle purchases,” and an expansion of the state’s red flag law.

The New York Times reported that Democrats “plunged into the national debate” with their gun control votes.

On June 1, Breitbart News noted that Gov. Hochul was reaching beyond firearms that Democrats call “assault weapons,” targeting “semiautomatic rifles” in general.

On May 31 Hochul tweeted, “New York already has some of the toughest gun laws in the country — but there’s more work to do to keep New Yorkers safe. We are going to strengthen gun laws, give law enforcement tools to prevent crime, & stop the spread of dangerous weapons.”

Hochul posted a summary of the new gun control bills to her website:

    The bills would: require information sharing between state, local and federal agencies when guns are used in crimes; make threatening mass harm a crime; require microstamping for new guns; increase accountability for social media platforms; eliminate grandfathering of large capacity ammunition feeding devices; prohibit the purchase of body armor for anyone who is not engaged in an eligible profession; strengthen the Red Flag law by expanding the list of people who can file for Extreme Risk Protection Orders, and other measures; require that an individual obtain a license, with a minimum age of 21, to purchase a semiautomatic rifle; and close the “any other weapon” loophole.

New York Democrat legislators rallied behind gun control.

During debate, state Sen. Gustavo Rivera (D) praised the idea of requiring a permit for semiautomatic rifle purchases, saying, “I want it to be a hassle.”

Just catching up to Connecticut, which already HAS such a law.
In fact, you can't even buy a box of ammunition without the state-issued weapons ID card.

Anything that even "looks like" an AR is already banned.
That includes .22 rifles such as the Smith & Wesson MP15-22.

The NY law was a done deal in that state. There's no meaningful opposition any more at the state legislative level. There are Republicans -- but nowhere near enough of them. Similar to California.

In California to buy ammo you have to have either an old DL that does not say restricted or the new DL which you can't get without a birth certificate or passport...or you have to pay to take a test to get a Firearm Safety Certificate which is only good for two years. Big surprise for me when I was denied an ammo  purchase because of having a DL with restricted on it because I don't have my BC. One more piece of bullshit by Cal Nazis to make you have to pay to exercise your God given rights.

Microstampng can be defeated with a small file, but to my knowledge is not available on any production firearms. In other words, you can have a gun, but it is made of unobtainium.

What are they gonna do, and who will get in trouble for posting something that just counters the narrative, rather than actually made a threat. What's to stop burner phones and sockpuppet accounts from overwhelming this? Monitor it and act on credible threats (investigate, and keep eyes on).

How large is large? Thirty rounds is the standard AR magazine, some pistols have mags up to 15 rounds standard. Changing that throws off the weight and balance of the firearm. Nothing dumber than stuffing a placebo in the mag well, especially with a long, hot summer coming and a sketchy power grid.

But for the dumbest of the dumb ideas:

prohibit the purchase of body armor for anyone who is not engaged in an eligible profession

The most passive means of saving your life, cheaper than a rifle (and most quality handguns) is a set of level IIIa body armor. It is not impervious to everything, but can passively save a life even when no firearm is allowed. Soft level IIIa will stop most handgun bullets, even if the impact will leave a mark.

Body armor has no offensive capability, so once again the overlords want to make people more vulnerable, not less. As far as assessing threats to a person's person, that is not something some faceless bureaucrat should be deciding based on occupation. If the neighbor is raving drunk yelling "I'ma gonna shoot your ...",  you should be able to at least take this step to protect yourself from future events. The stuff should be sold, off the rack in malls, for Pete's sake, not withheld for the politicians and bankers and their security staff (not counting the police). It's a frigging garment, not a weapon.

It's usually best to not delve into politicians' motivations lest one end up stupider for the effort. Nowhere is that truer than in the bills signed Monday by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) that, among other foolish restrictions, ban the acquisition of body armor by anybody outside of a few favored, government-controlled professions. These protective devices, incapable of offensive use unless thrown especially hard, are now unavailable for legal purchase by New Yorkers seeking even the most passive means of defending themselves and their loved ones.

"As in far too many other mass shootings, the gunman in Buffalo went into the store wearing a bulletproof vest so he would be safe while he slaughtered innocent victims," insisted Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson. "Unless your profession puts you at risk of gun violence, there is no reason you need this kind of body armor. This bill will help keep bulletproof vests out of the hands of those who want to protect themselves from law enforcement or other security officers while harming others."  ...

Now New York government officials think they're going to deprive people of items that can't be used to hurt anybody, but which may protect their wearers against criminals and, yes, against cops good and bad. They want to prevent the public from purchasing protection even as stories continue to appear about the unwillingness and inability of police to act in Uvalde, Texas, and in many violent incidents before. Rather than rely on law enforcement, people take responsibility for their own safety by purchasing firearms and, unsurprisingly, body armor. Parents are eagerly buying protection for their kids.

"Parents are doing anything to keep their kids safe on the heels of another school mass shooting -- and that means an all-new run on bulletproof backpacks," reports TMZ.   ...

Let's go back to Assemblyman Jacobson's justification for this new law. "This bill will help keep bulletproof vests out of the hands of those who want to protect themselves from law enforcement or other security officers while harming others," he said. That is, he wants to make it more difficult for people to avoid being shot, on the assumption that it will be good cops doing the shooting. But there are far more decent human beings concerned about their safety than there are bad people intending harm. It's unfortunate that those who intend harm are capable of using the same tools available to good people, but that's an inevitable byproduct of shared humanity. Decent people shouldn't be made collateral damage of anti-crime efforts.  ...
