The Army's dream of artillery that fires 1,000 miles is officially a dud
Max Hauptman - Yesterday 2:41 PM

Artillery with a range of 1,000 miles? That’s going to have to wait, at least for now.

The Army has decided to cancel the research effort for the Strategic Long-Range Cannon program, which would have theoretically used a rocket-boosted artillery shell capable of traveling 1,000 nautical miles.

After Congress cut funding for the project, “the Secretary of the Army decided to terminate the [SLRC] project this year,” Army spokesperson Ellen Lovett told Defense News on May 20.

I'm a Navy guy so I don't always quite get what other branches are doing, but I've never understood why this big push to have a canon fire 1,000 miles when missiles can do it with a bigger payload. :shrug:

@rangerrebew

I was in the army,but never a cannon-cocker,and I don't understand it,either.

Does the Army see members of the artillery as "spare parts" for people killed in other areas?

Nope. AFAIK,being an artilleryman requires special training. I don't remember meeting a former artilleryman in my 7 years in the army,except for a few officers.
