When it was unveiled in November, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger’s Talent Management plan appeared to open the door to the unthinkable: Allowing people to join the Marine Corps without going to boot camp.

While the Marine Corps already allows musicians in the President’s Own band to bypass recruit training, the notion that “exceptionally talented Americans” in technologically advanced fields might be able to likewise skip a foundational Marine Corps tradition to fill critically needed billets was met with much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

The Marines are a fascinating tribe. It is ingrained in Marine Corps culture that unless you have been screamed at by a drill instructor, who maliciously disgorged the contents of your seabag all over the squad bay, then you do not deserve to wear the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.

But Berger recently told reporters that the idea of allowing civilians to join the Marine Corps at a rank commensurate with their education, experience, and ability would not necessarily include a pass for boot camp.

“We haven’t said one way or the other,” Berger told reporters during a May 5 roundtable. “We haven’t found the person yet. And when we find the person, we’ll go from there.” :chairbang:“We haven’t said one way or the other.”

I will believe this is going to happen when I start seeing birds flying backwards.

Ask ANY US Marine what his job in the USMC is,and if he isn't a grunt,he will tell you,"Right now my duty is as a whatever, but I am really a rifleman!

It pretty much HAS to be that way because the primary mission of a Marine is to assault a fortified and defended enemy beach under fire, and that means they suffer a LOT of causalities.

That has always been the traditional role of the USMC in every war all the way up to VN.  For all practical purposes this has changed since the end of the Korean War because there has been no beaches to assault, but you can bet that is still their mindset.

Come to think about it,for all practical purposes, given the armament and tac air support of today, chances are there will never again be another beach assault. Beach defenses,by definition are static, and with today's missiles and aircraft capability of launching long-distance ordinance, when and if the USMC ever hits another beach, there will be nothing there but sand and smoking rubble.

I am sure the USMC will introduce doctrine changes some time in the next century or two to match modern requirements.

Boot camp is the best part of "Full Metal Jacket" and "The Boys in Company C".

The purpose of Boot Camp is to deconstruct the individual to build a cohesive fighting unit.
"Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it’s entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end." - Alan Simpson, Frontline Video Interview

And that my friend is why I can believe the woke leadership eliminating it, socialists don't want a strong cohesive American military.

Socialists also want to destroy the patriotic spirit and love of country the Marines instill so well in their troops. 13859
