Onondaga is first county in NY to be hit with new Covid strain

Central New York’s high Covid-19 rate could be due to yet another coronavirus subvariant tearing through the community, Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said Wednesday. The newest version of the omicron variant is called BA2.12, and McMahon said it is even more infectious than BA.2., which is the dominant strain in the state and country.

It's a small notice in a small upstate outlet.  I don't think it's worth all the hyperbole being launched at it.

I was n Costco yesterday. I would say it was about 75% unmasked, 25 % masked. Kind of surprised me. Earlier this week I went mall walking and it was about 50/50.

It isn't just Onondaga County, NY.

I'm in Fairfield County, Connecticut.
I've been keeping a daily spreadsheet of covid infections since the first case in Connecticut on March 8, 2020.

Here's how new cases per week have gone in my town over the past few months:
1/28 - 432
2/4 - 155
2/11 - 81
2/18 - 46
2/25 - 33
3/4 - 20
3/11 - 14
3/18- 11
3/25 - 9 (at this point, I was thinking, "this is over")
4/1 - 69
4/8 - 46
4/13 - 46 (not a full week yet)

This ain't over, folks.
At least, not where I am.

Actually it is.  Case numbers are not interesting now that the virus has mutated to be somewhere between a common cold and a moderately bad seasonal flu in terms of virulence.  We don't keep case numbers on either common colds or typical seasonal influenza.  The only problem is getting the wannabe tyrants with the levers of the public health apparatus to give up pretending it isn't over.  What do the hospitalization and fatality rates look like there?  It's over. Really.

Maybe 1 in 10 has a mask on in the local Walmart, and most of those are employees. They are fairly rare in most places in town.
