Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

@Smokin Joe

Not as ridiculous  as it seems at first glance. I can tell you as a MC rider for more than 40 years that you do NOT want to get a wasp,or any other insect forced down your throat by a 60 MPH wind.

He is wearing safety glasses for a similar reason. You do NOT want to get hit in the eye by a rock thrown up by a truck tire,or anything else when riding down the road.

As for helmets,they are mostly pacifiers for the clueless when it comes to road riding. They DO have their proper place in racing circles because of the unique situation of closed loop racing.

Mostly useless at any speed over 35 MPH or so highway driving,though. Ever passed by a MC accident and see some goober lying dead in the road with a broken neck from his helmet snapping it after he was hit from behind while stopped at a red light?

Or seen one laying in the road with his helmet full of blood?

I  used to be a true-believer when it came to wearing helmets,and then had a good friend convince me to try riding without one for a week. I have never voluntarily worn a helmet since. You can see and hear so much better without them that wearing one is actually dangerous,and this ain't even addressing the broken necks from whiplash due to the extra weight on your head in a "sudden stop accident".

You're preaching to the choir, bro. Always (well, almost always) wore gloves, favored gauntlets, leather jacket, and goggles. I switched to gauntlets after a wasp went up my sleeve going down the highway at 50, and the rotten critter managed to sting me seven times on the way to my armpit while I was shutting the bike down.  Only wore a helmet when I had to (which meant Canada in these parts) and never liked it, for all the reasons you stated.
As for bugs down the pipe, I usually kept my trap shut because I'd end up with a mouthful of beard...

In a bad year, the grasshoppers were the threat, here, they'd grow to three inches and you did not want to get hit with one of those, especially in the face.

And this ain't even addressing the danger (back then) of getting hit in the eye or mouth with a hot cigarette butt someone just tossed out their window.
