Well,ya gotta admit, those wimmins NEVER had so much incentive to swim quickly prior to that event.

I would be shocked if a new world speed record wasn't set.

@Kamaji

PLEASE tell me you are kidding!

Although that DOES go a long ways towards explaining why so many children of the elites are morons.

I seriously doubt many blue collar kids got these as gifts. I grew up in the 50's and never even heard of one, never mind knew anybody that had one.

Which is probably a good thing because back then I like making things explode and was a HUGE fan of buying chemicals from the drug store to mix together.

My mother put an end to this when I blew up the sidewalk in front of our house and they had to pay to have a new one installed.

So ended my experimental days at the public library and the drug store.

Had to wait until I got in the army to blow stuff up again, but for some reason my enthusiasm seemed to scare people,so they wouldn't let me mess with demo and made me a weapons and radio guy instead.

NOBODY messes with a SF demo man.

Radioactive watch dials and clocks were pretty common then:

They glowed continuously without having to be put under a bright light to recharge.

The government was pretty blase about the risks from uranium back then.  Obviously, the concentrated U-235 stuff was verboten, but uranium ore was considered non-dangerous, and the government basically encouraged all and sundry to mine for the stuff the same way one would mine for gold or silver.

Those ingots were incredibly weak. Painted dishes from Mexico gave my Geiger Counter much, much more of a rise.

People didn't appreciate the dangers back then.  Remember, people used to use an x-ray machine at the shoe store to check to see if their feet fit in a new pair of shoes.

It is worse than that. In 1930s women used radioactive makeup.

When beauty products were radioactive

And there was radioactive medicine.

Especially in the '50s. And yes, I have a couple of bits of uranium ore around, as I was head that way up until 3 Mile Island. Then I went to work in the oil patch, where neutron sources are kept tightly accounted for, and the gamma rays come from the rock itself...
